The Final Four (Shakey’s V-League Season 5)

Posted in Shakey's V-League, V-League Season 5

8 teams have tried. 2 remained dominant at first. 2 came from the south to challenge the other 4. But among the 6, only 2 prevailed as well. The 2 from the quarterfinals joined the 2 who dominated the eliminations. And now there are 4. 4 teams who prevailed. 4 teams who have achieved among the 8. Among them, only 2 will again prevail to proceed to the next battle. A battle for supremacy. A battle to be the greatest.

Gearhead’s ‘A series of unfortunate events at the Shakey’s V-League’ part 2

Before reading Gearhead’s “A series of unfortunate events at the Shakey’s V-League” part 2, you should read part 1 first. And oh, you should also know what “to accost” means as Joey Villaluz (better known as Gearhead) has become very fond of using this term:

  • accost
: to approach and speak to often in a challenging or aggressive way

This “series of unfortunate events” could have happened to me or any other typical Shakey’s V-League fan out there. This is really sad and unfair. This particular incident happened last May 11 (Sunday) during game two between University of San Jose and Far Eastern University. The USJ Lady Jaguars won in 5 sets: 20-25, 25-15, 24-26, 25-17, 15-10.

Okay, you can now start reading part 2…

Shakey’s V-League, NOT amateur-photographer-friendly anymore?

USJ guest player Mechell Matuguina spikes it hard

This photo may be (I hope not) one of the last photos I would be taking for the Shakey’s V-League Season 5. This photo as well as a few more selected ones were taken last May 4 at The Arena during the V-League debut game of Visayan team University of San Jose. They defeated the still winless College of Saint Benilde in 3 sets: 25-22, 25-20, 25-23. You can check out all the volleyball action photos at the Photo Gallery section.

So why “last photos”? Because Shakey’s V-League seems to be NOT too friendly anymore to amateur photographers (and “feeling” shutterbugs like me). I was informed by friends whom I got to know by watching the V-League games, that since it’s the Quarter Finals already, the management have decided to prioritize professional photographers coming from the Media. So ringside spots like the one behind the banners are now strictly for the pros only.

The Crème de la Crème Series: Boto and Segodine, The Power Walls

Posted in Others, V-League Season 5

Blocking is an important defensive skill in the game of volleyball. And it is one of the hardest skills to learn, and it does not ensure a point most of the time, unless properly executed. The objectives of blocking is to stop the ball, and hopefully return it to the opponents side for a point, also making the court easier for the back row to defend, and to deflect the ball up so that it can be used for an attack. In this department, Beverly Boto of the Lyceum Lady Pirates and Michelle Segodine built the toughest wall to destruct.

Thai Imports add spice anew in post-preliminaries round

Posted in V-League Season 5, Volleyball News

Quarter Finals is fast approaching and other teams who did not make it to the semis right away have one more week to change their guest players, if ever they really want to boost their campaign in this conference’s edition of the Shakey’s V-League. The tentative start of the Quarter Finals is next week, May 4, which might feature an Ateneo vs La Salle opening. La Salle, meaning the University of Saint La Salle Lady Stingers who will be coming from Visayas together with University of San Jose – Recoletos Lady Jaguars.

Ateneo vs. San Sebastian volleyball action photos by Michael Bartolo

Posted in Photos and Videos, V-League Season 5

Micheal Bartolo says:

San Sebastian won in 3 sets!!!

I didn’t manage to shoot the first game (FEU-CSB) because I was late.

But got in time for the San Sebastian vs. Ateneo de Manila game. When I got there I noticed Pu Kanchana (Ateneo’s guest player) was just sitting on the courtsides with Bualee. And she is not wearing her uniform. At first, I thought that Ateneo’s other Thai import has just arrived and will now be playing for the Lady Eagles. But there was no new Thai import on the Ateneo squad. I then started to ask some people I know. Then someone told me that Pu Kanchana’s father just passed away, so she has to go back to Thailand immediately.

A very sad day for the Lady Eagles. All I can say is condolences to Pu . To the rest of the Ateneo squad, just keep playing!! Its not yet over!!

The Lady Stags defeated the heartbroken Ateneo de Manila in 3 straight sets: 25-15, 25-21, 26-24. Here are some selected volleyball action photos during the game by Michael Bartolo…
