FEU vs. UST playoff

Yes, they are a tremendous team. Yes, they are the defending champs. Yes, they have the national team coach. Yes, they are armed with the most rabid volleyball fans in the country. And yes, they just lost in the final four, losing for the fourth time in as many games to their arch rival FEU, a team who just always has their number. But do not despair volleyball fans, this is only the beginning of something great. There are two sides to every coin and I will start with this one.

UST’s unexpected fall from championship contention is good for the sport of volleyball because of a number of reasons:

UST Tigresses and Ateneo Lady Eagles – both in a “do or die” situation

Posted in UAAP Volleyball

The University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University Women’s Volleyball Teams are perhaps two of the most followed teams in the UAAP. One being followed for their height and power while one are being followed for a splendid defense and a player named Charo Soriano. In Last V-League, you would see how the support of both teams flowed as there were yellow balloons for the Espana-based team while blue paper strips to raise for the Katipunan-based team.

Incidentally, these two teams, UST and Ateneo are the two of the top three teams who competed in the recently concluded Shakey’s V-League. UST is of course the back-to-back champions while the Ateneo Lady Eagles are the third placers.

FEU Lady Tams playing “nothing to lose and everything to gain”

The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws is perhaps one of the youngest teams in the UAAP right now. Looking at their roster, majority of their players are below 19 years which includes the small but terrible Mhica Morada and the threatening rookie Shai Gonzalez who are but 17 years old. The rest of their first six lineup are mostly on their 3rd or 4th years in college. This year was supposed to be their rebuilding year since a lot of players graduated in their team. But wait, aren’t rebuilding teams supposed to be not in the top of the rankings? Hmm. Not for FEU. They’re showing to the public that even though they are a young team, they have a crack at the finals. And besides, this just goes to show how good the volleyball program of FEU is. Who would even thought that a very young demoralized FEU team from last season would come back and give it a shot again in the Finals. A lot of people predicted them to end up below 3rd place or even not to enter the UAAP Volleyball Final Four but they proved everyone wrong. This team has the makings of another dynasty-filled team with most their young players still have 2-3 more playing years from now.

De La Salle’s four wins nullified

Ouch. Why La Salle, WHY???

Like Rick, I have no idea how to spin this in a positive way. This is just a damn travesty to the sport of volleyball and yet another setback for the La Salle sports program. Look, I have nothing against La Salle, but..

“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

Good luck to the rest of the teams, may the games be exciting so we could all forget this horrendous saga. Again.
