The opening has been moved several times already (from the original July 3, then was moved to July 24) as the V-League folks had to finds ways to fill in their targeted number of participating teams in order for the league to push through.

Only 3 school teams are participating this time around. It’s called Open Conference because the rest of the teams are corporate (non-school) teams.

A month ago, news had already been circulating that the target of having 8 teams were already met but apparently, one team backed out. According to online gossip, Meralco was the team who begged off. Anybody knows why? So we are now left with 7 teams namely:

1. Ateneo de Manila University – the defending UAAP champs, headed by Fille “The Heat” Cainglet as their team captain, players to watch out for are MVP Alyssa Valdez, Dzi Gervacio, Jem Ferrer, Gretchen Ho

2. University of Perpetual Help System (DALTA) – players to watch out for are Sandra Delos Santos, April Anne Sartin

3. San Sebastian College (Recoletos) – remains to be a solid team as usual

4. Team Navy – composed of mostly Adamson players including Angela Benting and Nerissa Bautista, other players to watch out for are Michelle Laborte, Janet Serafica, Pau Soriano

5. Team Air Force – players to watch out for are Cherry Macatangay, Jennifer Manzano, Wendy Anne Semana

6. Team Army – after a win-less campaign during the Asian Women’s Volleyball Club, this team must be hungry to redeem themselves, led by Rachel Ann Daquis, Aiza Maizo, and Mary Jean Balse, other players to watch out for are Michelle Carolino, Dahlia Cruz, Tina Salak

7. Team Maynilad – players to watch out for are Charisse Ancheta, Joy Cases, Nica Guliman, Margarita Pepito

The Shakey’s V-League will be presenting the teams and players to the media on July 29, two days before the opening.

A blessing in disguise?

There’s no hiding the fact that the Shakey’s V-League had suffered a major blow this second conference as teams pulled out for whatever reasons they have (UST and DLSU cited their players’ academics as their reasons). Dubbing it as Open Conference seems a creative marketing effort so that the fans can move their attention away from these unfortunate incidents. Despite these setbacks, the V-League folks are committed to make the most out of this coming Season 8 Open Conference.

If you take a step back and view all this from a positive point of view, we should remember and realize that one of the goals of the Shakey’s V-League when it was established years ago is to pave the way for the development of commercial volleyball leagues in the country. So perhaps, this Open Conference may be a blessing in disguise after all, don’t you think?

On one hand, losing a lot of school teams can pave the way for the commercialization of teams for Shakey's V-League as they take in and give chance to corporate teams (so to speak) to participate. Maybe it's time for the V-League to take risks and create more of these non-school based teams and not merely capitalize on the popularity of college volleyball. Besides, UAAP and NCAA will always be there. Let's hope that the upcoming Shakey's V-League Season 8 Second Conference is going to be exciting because of these turn of events.
I’m not too sure if this is good or bad news. But it’s certainly very interesting. On one hand, losing a lot of school teams can pave the way for the commercialization of teams for Shakey’s V-League as they take in and give chance to corporate teams (so to speak) to participate. Maybe it’s time for the V-League to take risks and create more of these non-school based teams and not merely capitalize on the popularity of college volleyball. Besides, UAAP and NCAA will always be there. Let’s hope that the upcoming Shakey’s V-League Season 8 Second Conference is going to be exciting because of these turn of events. Let’s watch out and support the V-League folks!

This article is taken from BallersPinas.com website:

Shakeys V League Season 8 2nd Conference List of Participating Teams: 3 School Teams and 5 Corporate Teams

Long and behold, the Teledyaryo Sports news anchor Mr. Snow Badua has finally divulged that there will only be 3 schools who will be part of the 2011 Shakey’s V-League Season 8 2nd Conference volleyball action. He included the Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles, University of Perpetual Help System-DALTA, and the San Sebastian College – Recoletos. The other 5 teams will have to be corporate teams and they will complete the 8 participating teams in the V-League.

In line with the aforementioned news, the Sports Vision Chairman of the Shakey’s V-League, Moying Martelino said:

“The league won’t settle for four teams, saying they are negotiating with four more teams to join since he said the ideal number of teams to run a league is eight. We are still finalizing the roster of teams, and we will announce this week the four new teams.”

Martelino refused to name the other 5 teams but they will most likely be corporate teams. These 5 other teams will surely take the league to another level because those corporate team will have the chance to choose the members of their respective team rosters. The competition will be a lot tougher in the V-League this coming 2nd conference because of those 5 corporate teams and as a result, the League’s mission and vision to help in the Philippine volleyball development will be fortified by the admission of those 5 corporate teams. In effect, this will also make the league a semi-commercial league. If the V-league will be a semi-commercial league, the players will have higher allowances. It will attract former college volley star players to play in the V-League and as a consequence, the other amateur volleyball players will get more experience from the V-League games because of the influx of the veteran players in the league.

So what are corporate teams in the V-League exactly? I suppose this simply means having teams that are composed of recruited players which obviously will be former college standouts, national team veterans, or even guest players from abroad (maybe in the future). And these teams will have to be sponsored and backed by companies covering everything including the players’ allowances.

The big question remains: Has the local volleyball scene become big enough so companies will be willing to invest and thus, create such corporate teams to pave the way for the commercialization (or at least semi-commercialization) of volleyball leagues in the country such as the Shakey’s V-League? We just have to wait and watch out for the V-League 8 which is set to start this July 17, 2011.

Anybody knows who these 5 corporate teams will be? Do you know of any players being recruited for these teams?

UPDATE: According to another news article, there are actually 4 school teams that confirmed joining V-League 8 2nd Conference namely: Ateneo, University of Perpetual Help, San Sebastian College-Recoletos, and Lyceum. Here’s more info about the issue from Tempo.com.ph website:

V-League hit by pullouts
by Francis Santiago of Tempo.com.ph

The Shakey’s V-League suffered a major blow after four teams pulled out of the competition, leaving the country’s premiere volleyball tournament with only four teams when it opens its Season 8 second conference on July 10. Ricky Palou, president of the organizing Sports Vision, said only Ateneo, University of Perpetual Help, San Sebastian College and Lyceum were left in the roster after Adamson University and Far Eastern University begged off from competition.

University of Santo Tomas and La Salle, which missed the previous conference, also confirmed their continued absence as the four squads cited the academic load of players as main reasons for the withdrawal. It was the biggest number of teams to withdraw in a single conference since the league was established in 2004, but Martelino sees a silver lining in the unwelcome development.

He said the four squads coming in are non-school based, a move that could pave way for the league planned transformation into a semi-commercial league. For the past two years, the league has been harping the plan, which it said if realized will help the country in producing top calibre players who could put the country back in the volleyball map.

“This could be a blessing in disguise,” Martelino said. “We might be undergoing a process of migration to the planned semi-commercial league.”

The Lady Eagles have finally landed their first ever Shakey’s V-League championship crown just a while ago by defeating Adamson University in Game 2 of their best of three finals series. It was a hard fought duel that lasted 5 sets. Congratulations to Ateneo and to Adamson for giving us an exciting Shakey’s V-League finals match up. First time Ateneo head coach Charo Soriano of Ateneo becomes the youngest coach ever to win a V-League championship crown.

In the previous battle for third place match up, University of St. La Salle ends their best of three series by defeating the Lady Bulldogs in 3 straight sets.

Ateneo de Manila – we are the champions! (for the first time)

Best of three Finals series, Game 2. May 17, 2011 (Tuesday). Ateneo de Manila University defeated Adamson University in 5 sets: 24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 19-25, 15-11.
Finals Most Valuable Player: (#12) Jamenea Ferrer of Ateneo de Manila University

University of St. La Salle gets the third place spot by defeating the Bulldogs

Battle for Third Place (best of three games series), Game 2. May 17, 2011 (Tuesday). University of St. La Salle defeated National University in 3 sets: 25-17, 25-21, 25-13.
I knew it. I should have not hoped for a game 3 and should have woke up and watch the game live at The Arena. I haven’t watched any V-League games live for a long time now. Congratulations again to the Lady Eagles.

By any chance, did anybody record the games? Please share

Will post more Shakey’s V-League action photos in a while… By the way, today is Lady Eagle Ayel Potnongon’s birthday! She must have been Ateneo’s lucky charm today. Happy bday Ayel!

Adamson University moves onto the Finals as they defeated University of St. La Salle-Bacolod
yesterday. The Lady Falcons beat their opponents in 4 sets: 26-24, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17. The tandem of Angela Benting and Nerissa Bautista headed the Falcons' offensive onslaught with 19 and 21 won points respectively.

As for the Lady Eagles, they defeated their semi-finals opponents, National University, in 3 sets however, this win has been forfeited because of a violation committed (an unfortunate error committed by first time head coach Charo Soriano). Bea Tan of Ateneo was entered into the team's lineup originally as the team libero. But Bea played as a regular player during the NU match. Under the FIVB rules, a libero cannot revert back to playing as a regular player.

Ateneo will face off National University once again for a sudden death game tomorrow, May 12, 4pm at San Juan Arena gym. It's going to be a heart beaker should Ateneo lose this one.

But in the event that two or more will win the major prize, it will be in a raffle system, with the first pick bagging the major prize and the second pick bagging the consolation prize!

Prizes include:

- Major Prize – V-League Bundle at Shakey’s Pizza Restaurant with barkada or 1000 load
- Consolation Prize – Ringside ticket or 300 peso load

Anyway, here’s our first item for this conference of the Shakey’s V-League:
