The Green Corner #8: Farewells and Last Hurrahs

Posted in Reflections, UAAP Season 72, UAAP Volleyball

It’s going to be the last weekend in the elimination and last games also for certain players. As the season comes to an end, it’s time to evaluate performances of different teams. The games of the past are usually games which might just define a team’s season. But the last game of a team is usually the game that will describe what might be, what could have been and what might have been. Improvements and other misfortunes have been in this season. Despite that, excitement still rose to the occasion and here we are. Only weeks away in determining which team will be hailed as champions. To the Final Four team, La Salle, Ateneo, UST and Adamson, congratulations. To those who failed to make it, I’m sure we will watch out for you next season.

We decided to make our Elimination Ender with a blast. And thus, we will post our game predictions and our farewells to non-Final Four teams. Watch out for the upcoming articles as we will be doing also the Men’s.

The Green Corner #7: Urgency

It’s time to press the panic button, at least for some teams. Among all teams, UE, UP and NU are teams who are looking ahead of things, at least for recruitment and development for next season. They are there to spoil things around. Needless to say, they will try to challenge and win over teams who are aspiring to be on top or to achieve something. Oh believe me, UAAP’s crazy. Anything in the UAAP is crazy. Anything can happen. They may be in the cellar, but they can pull teams down, and pull teams up.

The remaining games are very exciting. Even the main game tomorrow is as exciting since we all know Adamson has a hard time against blocking teams. UP is one of the best blocking teams and thus, making the game tomorrow crucial but exciting. On Sunday of course, it will be the volleyball rivalry featuring UST and FEU. Who will prevail? Let’s see.

The Games this coming weekend for the UAAP 72 Women’s Volleyball 2nd Round are as follows:

Saturday, February 6, 2010
venue: San Juan Arena

2 PM: UE vs ADMU
4 PM: AdU vs UP

Sunday, February 7, 2010

The Green Corner #6: Momentum

After a very colorful and what seemed like an exhausting week, we finally have games which will be not that easy but far off from the lever. At least, we’ll get some kind of rest from the more exhausting but exciting watch kind of games. Especially this coming Saturday, it is somewhat a preview already of the Final Four as UST-Adamson and Ateneo-La Salle kick it off at The Arena, in one day, at the same venue. I can’t imagine how The Arena will be packed come Saturday knowing that the top four teams will face off against each other.

The Games this coming Wednesday for the UAAP 72 Women’s Volleyball 2nd Round are as follows:

Wednesday, February 3, 2010
venue: San Juan Arena

2PM: UP vs ADMU

This coming Saturday is probably the best day in UAAP Sesaon 72. It will most likely showcase the four teams that will meet in the Final Four. So for those four timers, you guys are lucky if ever you’ll watch it live or on tv, because you are bound to have one crazy day of volleyball. For sure the coming weekend will not only feature great match-ups but the duration of the games might just be very long that Batman Series and Oprah Winfrey might not be able to catch up anymore with their program in Studio 23. Hehe. Kidding aside, the upcoming weekend is spectacular. I just don’t get why they have to put the more exciting games on a Saturday. For sure the games tomorrow will be very exciting.

The Games this coming weekend for the UAAP 72 Women’s Volleyball 2nd Round are as follows:

UAAP Midterm Grades: A Food For Thought

Truly this season is packed with suprises that we volleyball fans are very pleased to know things like DLSU (along with their rookies) showing dominance in this season; how Tabaquero and their rookies has affected the quality of play they are showing. A much improved UP and NU teams, a Daquis-less and Morada-less season for FEU (add to Shai’s injury which caused her to stop playing until now) which is solely being caried by Cherry Vivas and how the Lady Eagles and Lady Falcons have stepped up their games and played with more maturity and finally, how a very disappointing Lady Warriors may have found theirselves on probably the worst scoring volleyball game in recent UAAP history.

So to give our dear readers on my insights on how the teams have perfomed read on… (This is in no particular order)

The Green Corner #3: Thriller

Now it get’s exciting. After the first round, three teams are tied for second. Wow this is really going to be an exciting season. Who knows come the end of eliminations, three teams will be log jammed for second. This is really looking good. Teams usually change their games, first six, heck even their uniforms come second round. Second round is just like a thriller round. Because of teams wanting to win more and to elevate their performance, games become much more exciting. Upsets happen and tiebreaks usually happen. More painful losses and sweeter wins happen in this round. So prepare for some second round thriller.

The Green Corner #2: One and Done

The games this weekend were very boring in my opinion. Only the Ateneo vs FEU game gave us a thriller but it was a very good quality volleyball that was given to us by both teams. Both teams must’ve had a spa or massage or something after because you can see in their faces that they were hella tired. The floor defenses of both teams were very commendable. However, the team with more offensive options won.

Also historic this weekend was UST’s win against UE. Two single-digit sets for UE. Damn. UE must be really embarrassed and must be training harder now to give a better show to the UAAP fans in their next game.

The Last Games this week for the UAAP 72 Women’s Volleyball 1st Round are as follows:

Tuesday, January 12, 2010
venue: San Juan Arena

2PM: UP vs NU
4PM: UE vs ADMU

Wednesday, January 13, 2010
venue: San Juan Arena

2PM: UST vs. AdU
4PM: DLSU vs. FEU

My Batangas summer volleyball experience

Posted in Reflections

NOTE: This blog post has just been updated to include some photos.

Eric and friends during their Batangas summer outing

Summer is here and the hottest place to be is…. the beach!!! On March 14-16, me and a number of my friends stayed in Matabungkay, Batangas for our early summer outing. Matabungkay is a place where you can relax, swim, and of course, play our favourite sport – volleyball by the panoramic view of the sea. It also served as a pre-despedida event for our friend Precy, a former volleyball player from San Sebastian College Recoletos de Cavite, who is now an OFW and about to return to his work on a cruise ship. So before his literal overseas occupation, we decided to strengthen our ties on this frugal but definitely enjoyable summer getaway.
