In volleyball’s recruiting wars, one player stood out among all high school players. This is none other than Jirah Llaneta of Perpetual Help – Molino. A 5’7 1/2 outside hitter, she has amazed UAAP and NCAA coaches with her hang time and leaping ability as well as her ability to score both using power and smart attacks and through very sharp service aces.
In the recently concluded STCAA (Southern Tagalog Calabarzon Athletic Association), among all coaches who talked to her, FEU and UST are the most aggressive, with the coaches promising her a first six slot in the team next season. The coaches of ADU and NU are also constantly talking to her. She has likewise trained with both the UAAP Season 74 finalists DLSU and ADMU and has impressed both coaches.
Rachel Anne Daquis dubbed by US Girls host Iya Villania as the queen of volleyball was featured in the show sometime last summer. Who is prettier, Rachel or Iya? Hmmm…
As part of promoting the UAAP Juniors Volleyball, I decided to interview players from the Ateneo de Manila High School, since as most people said, they, together with the University of the East High School are the favorites this year to make it to the Finals.
I was very open on how I enjoyed the recently concluded PVF National Open 2008. Seeing my favorite players was really a pleasurable distraction from the corporate world. UAAP and NCAA standouts, veterans, street volley players and RP Team members graced the event to play the game we all love, volleyball.
Wearing their pink and green uniform, Team Klownz got the attention of volleyball enthusiasts. Backed-up by the popular comedy bar, the team’s popularity rose not because only by it’s name, but as well as its key players who gave their best performances. Among them was former UP-MVT alumnus Allen Mendoza. He is one of the reasons that the team’s debut performance ended on a high note, finishing second, beating the 8 other contenders. With the combination of his technical experience gained from the UAAP and the vast skills he acquired from actively participating in street leagues, Allen was really a force to reckon. Let’s get to know him by this no holds-barred and very free flowing interview.
