A month ago, the NCAA folks were undecided as to where to hold the 85th NCAA Volleyball tournament. Earlier, discussion between the NCAA board and its partner Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) suggested the use of Rizal Memorial Sports Complex at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium as the official venue. But due to cost constraints, the NCAA had to break this deal off and decided to officially hold the volleyball games at the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) gymnasium.

Other than watching the 2008 Beijing Olympics on TV and following the games on the net, here are some collegiate basketball and volleyball games to watch out for this week. Taken from the Multiply blog of sports writer Mr. Theodore Jurado:

August 14, 2008 – Thursday 4pm: UST vs ADMU (UAAP Seniors Basketball)
Still mired at 5th place, the Growling Tigers need to pull through over the mighty Blue Eagles to keep within distance of the No. 4 slot. Japs and Jervy are getting into the groove!

August 15, 2008 – Friday 2pm: CSJL vs JRU (NCAA Seniors Basketball)
The only playdate at The Arena, San Juan. Jose Rizal will try to keep their hold at the No. 2 slot against a fresh Letran squad. Heavy bombers lost badly against the Knights during the opening day.

August 16, 2008 – Saturday 11am: CSB vs SSC-R (NCAA Women’s Volleyball)
Round 2. The Lady Blazers hope to bounce back from their four set loss to the Lady Stags during the first round. San Sebastian’s only single set loss was from CSB. All of The Lady Stags’ 5 of 6 wins were won in straight sets.

August 16, 2008 – Saturday 1pm: FEU vs DLSZ (UAAP Juniors Basketball)
The baby Tams stunned the Blue Eaglets in double overtime. Will they be the first team to beat the junior Archers? or will the DLSZ continue their winning streak?

August 17, 2008 – Sunday 930am: UE vs ADMU (UAAP Juniors Volleyball)
Venue: UE Gym. The Blue Eaglets are surprising while the junior Red Shirts are at their usual best. Will there be a huge upset? There’s a lucky charm out there!

After the conclusion of Shakey’s V-League Season 5 and 2008 National Open, the collegiate volleyball season have just started. The 84th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Volleyball Tournament started with a simple opening ceremony in San Beda College (SBC) gymnasium last July 12, 2008. Seven teams paraded with their respective juniors, women’s, and men’s volleyball players together.

The tournament happens every first semester of the academic year. The NCAA has three divisions namely Juniors for high school students, Seniors for male college students, and Women’s for female college students.

The San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) Women’s and Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) Men’s are the reigning champions coming into this season. You can see the history of NCAA Volleyball over here. It is easy to notice that some players will not see action this 84th NCAA season, like Jinni Mondegar of SSC-R and Bang Pantanleone of Letran. The games will be played either in SBC or SSC-R gym every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The team schedule of games will be posted in the coming days. Come and watch the NCAA volleyball games.

Taken from GMANews.tv website:

NCAA volleyball opens Saturday
July 11, 2008

MANILA, Philippines – The National Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball tournament kicks off with the women’s teams of Perpetual Help and San Beda College clashing at the San Beda College Gymnasium in Mendiola, Manila.

The Lady Altas and the Lady Lions duel at 9 a.m., right after the opening ceremonies scheduled at eight o’clock. The men’s squads of Perpetual and San Beda collide at 10 a.m., while their juniors teams will cross paths at 11 a.m.

San Sebastian is the defending champion in both the women’s and juniors divisions, while Letran College is the reigning men’s winners.

The Lady Stags, the winningest women’s squad in NCAA history with 19 titles, are aiming for a fourth straight championship, but coach Roger Gorayeb’s wards must do it without ace blocker Jinni Mondejar who has exhausted her playing eligibility.

“It’s a big challenge for us to win another title because Jinni is no longer around aside from the fact that mabigat ang laban talaga, malakas ang ibang teams,” said Gorayeb, whose team downed the Saint Benilde Lady Blazers in the championship round last season.

In their bid to rebound from a disappointing third-place finish in the recently concluded Shakey’s V-League first conference, San Sebastian will rely on reigning Most Valuable Player Lou Ann Latigay, Sasa Devanadera, Joy Benito and sisters Margarita and MJ Pepito.

Saint Benilde, which also competed in the V-League last summer, remains the biggest threat on the distaff side.

The Lady Blazers hope that team captain Anna Maranan, Katty Kwan, Doreen Sanchez, Giza Yumang and libero Zarah Lasac will step up this season.
