In volleyball’s recruiting wars, one player stood out among all high school players. This is none other than Jirah Llaneta of Perpetual Help – Molino. A 5’7 1/2 outside hitter, she has amazed UAAP and NCAA coaches with her hang time and leaping ability as well as her ability to score both using power and smart attacks and through very sharp service aces.
In the recently concluded STCAA (Southern Tagalog Calabarzon Athletic Association), among all coaches who talked to her, FEU and UST are the most aggressive, with the coaches promising her a first six slot in the team next season. The coaches of ADU and NU are also constantly talking to her. She has likewise trained with both the UAAP Season 74 finalists DLSU and ADMU and has impressed both coaches.

Due to the win-less performance of our Philippine Women’s Volleyball Team in the recently concluded 12th Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship where they placed last at 8th overall, the POC had to cut off the team from participating in the SEA Games 2011.

This kind of weekend volleyball tournaments are ideal for those recreational volleyball groups out there who wants to get a chance to compete and meet with other fellow volleyball groups. And since there are cash prizes, this can be a means to generate funds as well. The only problem I see is the fact that it’s literally “open” to any teams and/or players regardless of level of play. So expect a few hard-core volleyball teams who play for money to join.

Former University of the Philippines women’s team volleyball player Jed Montero (Rebecca Gail Montero) graces the July 2011 issue of FHM – the one with the Eula Valdes cover. Before she jumped into the world of TV hosting and perhaps an acting career someday, she was once one of the sought after faces in UAAP Volleyball. Her UAAP volleyball days were cut short due to an ankle injury.
Jed was also a candidate for the FHM 100 Sexiest Women edition. Here’s a sneak peek of the interview in the July 2011 issue of FHM that features Jed Montero, taken from www.fhm.com.ph site:
