Philippines is being represented by two beach volleyball teams coming from Ateneo de Manila University (Alysa Valdez – Bea Tan) and University of Southern Philippines Foundation (Erika Camille Verano – Apple Eve Saraum) in the July 15-20, 2011 1st Asian University Beach Volleyball in Laizhou, China.
They finished 3rd in their respective groups during the eliminations round and advanced to the quarter finals stage. This tournament is being organized by the Asia University Sports Federation and is being participated by Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Oman, Philippines, Sri-Lanka, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and U.A.E. Dubbed as the 2011 Battle of Champions, the third leg of the 9th Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Tournament kicks off on July 15 (Friday) at the volleyball sand courts of De La Salle University-Das Marinas (Health and Sciences campus) in Cavite. This third leg was supposed to take place in Pangasinan as originally planned, but the recent typhoons caused the organizers to move the venue to Cavite.

Ateneo de Manila is the designated host for this year’s 74th Season of the UAAP. For the first time, the UAAP thought of doing an Olympic-style ceremony during its opening last Saturday (July 9, 2011) at the Marikina Sports Park. Olsen Racela did the honors of lighting the cauldron to signal the start of UAAP 74. Despite the heavy rain, the athletes from all 15 sports disciplines from the different universities paraded around the track oval.
