These one-day volleyball mini tournaments have been existing for a long time now usually taking place at barangay hall courts. I just learned that it’s actually everywhere now. In most cases, it’s a winner take all the prize money kind of event. So some may think that this seems like a sort of underground volleyball being organized by volleyball mafia groups, because players who join these events usually do so to play for money. Is playing volleyball for money a bad thing?

If you think about it, there’s really nothing wrong to play volleyball and earn a few bucks at the same time. I don’t think it’s like the pustahan kind of environment you see in underground billiards or basketball in the streets (where isang litro ng Pop Cola ang prize). In the end, we see these one-day league abound in most barangays out there simply because volleyball is indeed the no. 2 sports in the country (or I wish that’s the case, I should say). So volleyball enthusiasts out there will do anything to enjoy the sport they love whether they play in a more formal volleyball tournament or in these one-day leagues.

Besides, it’s so easy to organize one-day leagues. You just need a suitable venue, provide the officials, and charge minimal fee per team. You let the participating teams battle it out. At the end of the day, a portion goes to the winning team/s, the rest go to the organizers.

Kalawaan Volleyball Club does it for charity

What I like about the Kalawaan tournament is the fact that, according to Mr. Howell Jimenez, proceeds of this activity will go to a charity group that teaches volleyball for free in certain barangays.

It’s also interesting to note that this one-day league is targeting recreational volleyball players. Not allowed are: ex-varsity players (UAAP, NCAA) within the last 3 years, current and former National RP Team, guest players and training pool members. The team lineups will be cross-checked during the coaches’ meeting.

    no. 2 sport?

i’d love it if it is tied with football and basketball for number 1… hehe

Tingin ko naman, there’s nothing wrong playing volleyball for money. It’s just the same as playing it for scholarships. They are playing the sport “professionally”…

Not just that. Dito din sa cavite my mga one day leagues din, pero hindi naman gaanong kahigpit. There are times pa nga that around 40 to 50 volleyball players meet to play, PhP50 per player, at bunutan ng mga magkakakampi, winner take all. These people are from different municipalities and cities around the province. So we can see that it’s not just about money, but also meeting new friends and sharing our passion for volleyball… *wink*

    • @eriQ: marami din pala dyan sa Cavite 🙂

mostly ba mga college players/18+ ang naglalaro sa mga open leagues like this one? i’m only highschool lang kasi, baka naman mapahiya lang kami dun pag maglabanan na. haha
