Some inspirational volleyball quotes to live by

It was raining hard last Wednesday and I got stuck inside a university campus. I was trying to reserve a court for Team Spikeithard’s volleyball training / try-outs for this Saturday. But the school’s college covered courts will be closed the entire weekend because of Undas. I was watching the heavy rain pour down then I got across this Ateneo Volleyball Club poster (was surprised to know there existed one) and then eventually landed at their website. And this is where I saw this wonderful volleyball quote:

“No volleyball play can begin without a serve, and the serve is the only technique that is totally under your control. In other endeavors, you cannot succeed without believing in yourself, and that belief is completely under your control.”
— Karch Kiraly —

Very true indeed. And I thought the first and most important basic skill to learn in volleyball is receiving the ball. But if you think about it, it is indeed the service that begins all plays in a volleyball match. Before the ACL injury I suffered back in college, I used to have a pretty decent jump serve then, although I was not that consistent all the time. I was just okay.

Now, I can barely get the proper timing of hitting the ball when jump serving. Karch’s words inspired me to consider improving the serving aspect of my game. But before I can do that, you got to have the proper mindset first – you got to believe in yourself!!! (that you can still do it even if you’ve gained weight and got rusty and all that).

The quote also made me realize about the stuff that happens in life which unfortunately, we cannot seem to control no matter how hard we try to. These are usually the bad things like getting laid off from your job, misunderstandings with friends, tragedies, disasters, being part of a broken family, etc. Instead of dwelling on things you cannot control, just move on, and focus on stuff you completely have control of and make the most out of it.

Karch Kiraly is considered as the Michael Jordan of volleyball. This guy is so good I think he’s still playing beach volleyball at the AVP Tour, is he? And here’s another famous quote from him:

When asked how he prepared to win Olympic gold: “I never did. I only prepared to win the next day.”
— Karch Kiraly —

Now that’s the kind of attitude all athletes of any sport should have. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner, an amateur, or just starting to learn. Volleyball and any other sports for that matter are competitive by nature. So therefore, it is only natural for any athlete of any sport to strive to improve one’s game and to become better – more competitive. And it’s all fun.

So the next time you play volleyball, consider being a bit more aggressive than the last time you played. Dive for the ball. Get an ace out of that serve. And spike it harder! Try to always win, but remember that it’s okay to lose too. You can join various volleyball groups out there and/or get free volleyball trainings to refine and enhance your skills. At the end of the day, you’ll end up enjoying playing volleyball even more and meet new friends at the same time.
