Completing my first 10K run at the Nike Human Race event

What the hell was I thinking when I decided to join The Human Race 10K event by Nike!!? I used to join fun run events back in high school but that was for 2.5 and occasional 5-kilometer fun run events only. Never did I expect to last a 10-kilometer race.

Last Saturday, I decided to postpone playing volleyball again so I can join the Nike Human Race 10K event which happened on Sunday (August 31, 2008). I learned about it last Friday from Jayvee’s blog. Should I have known earlier, I would have prepared for it by doing regular exercise at least 2 weeks before the event. So last Saturday, instead of going to Ateneo to play volleyball, I ended up going to the Nike store in Bonifacio High Street. Why? Well, it’s because this Human Race thingie is exclusive for Nike+ SportBand and Nike+ iPod Kit owners.

The Nike+ SportBand

At first glance, the Nike+ SportBand looks like a hi-tech stopwatch shaped like a USB thumb drive that attaches into a rubber sports band. It’s a cool device specifically developed for runners. It tracks your distance, time, pace, and calories burned. To make the most of it, you need to sign up for a free account over at nikeplus.com.ph website wherein you can “sync” your runs and do an assortment of other things with other runners from all over the world. Pretty cool huh.

The Nike+ SportBand is little bit pricey too at Php3,295 retail price. The Human Race 10K event was a clever marketing campaign as you are required to own a Nike+ SportBand in order to register for the race. Other than myself, I bet at least one-third of all the race participants were also compelled to head to a Nike store and buy the glorified stopwatch. If you already own an iPod Nano, you can get the cheaper Nike+ iPod Kit (Php1,400++).

Thanks to Jaymie of The Bull Runner blog, I was able to get a last minute 20% discount coupon for the Nike+ SportBand. Yipee!

Thanks Bong. We all had a great time during the race. I was also lucky enough to get the Nike Finisher bracelet… but what I really wanted was the orange Human Race T-shirt!! Not too sure if you can buy one at the Nike store…

i was just browsing and did not intend to post any comment. but.. but.. you forgot to record your run? that just got me and figured i should go ahead and drop a note :) hehe.
