Wondering what the hell does “legitimate week-end warriors” mean? Basically, it refers to former top-notch volleyball players from the RP Team, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Army, Philippine Navy, Shakey’s V-League, and college varsity volleyball. These are legendary local volleyball players who probably have families of their own by now and are suffering from arthritis due to old age. But can still kick some volleyball ass. For the upcoming Volle 650 Season 5 mixed volleyball tournament, the organizers amended the Eligibility rule to slightly favor the inclusion of such players.

In case you haven’t heard about the league, here’s a brief description of what Volle650 is all about. Taken from their Yehey sponsored official website (http://volle5.yehey.com/):

Vollé 650 Open – the league of the working class - is a series of open mixed volleyball tournaments launched in September 2005 (Season 1) with the primary intention of providing a venue where volleyball aficionados can express their passion for volleyball as well as promote Clubsixfifty Sports Center as the Metro’s Premiere Volleyball Hub.

The series is constricted to college graduates and generally the working class who continue to be avid supporters of the sport. The results of the past seasons have been nothing less than promising. Top caliber teams with exquisite skill sets have graced the tournament and showed what volleyball truly is all about.

As the range of expertise noticeably surfaced in the previous seasons, Season 5 will be a multi-division tournament to cater to teams of all skill range competitively, listed as follows:

Vollé Open Division: This division will be comprised of the top teams from the past seasons who are absolutely on top of their games.

Vollé Corporate Division: This division will be comprised of corporate teams. This division aims to widen its market and expose the tournament to more corporate teams.

For Season 5, the organizers have slightly amended the Eligibility rule to allow former national players, college varsities, and even former Shakey’s V-League stars. This will hopefully add a bit more excitement I suppose. One of the organizers, Mr. Marc Montenegro, explains:

Greetings to all Volle650 players!

First of all I would like to thank all the teams for their continued support of Volle650 which is now on its 5th season. We look forward to continuing this tournament for years to come.

As envisioned, Volle650 has become the tournament that we wanted it to be in terms of the level of competition and the type of players it caters to. During the past four seasons we have learned a lot of things that we intend to apply in its organization for its further improvement. Along with this we intended to raise the level of competition slightly by amending the eligibility rules of the tournament.

However, over the past weeks we have received several concerns about this move and we have decided to review certain clauses within the eligibility rules. We have decided after several considerations for Season 5, to maintain our original vision of the tournament where only “legitimate week-end warriors” will be allowed to compete (Pls. see attached revised rules of eligibility for details). Hopefully, this will be a more suitable arrangement for the teams this season.

Moving forward to the future of Volle650 we would like give the teams a heads up on our plans of allowing “slightly stronger” players to join. We feel that it will be good for the players and for the survival of the tournament itself. After all, “sports is about competition”. We’d love to hear your thoughts.

In lieu of these changes, as well as to give leeway for more teams to join, registration period will be extended until August 15, 2008.

As of the moment, there are 4 slots available for the Open Division and 2 slots for the Corporate Division.
