Ligang Kalye Part 2 – A shout out for Team Y41

Once again, I was invited by fellow Spikeithard folk, Beezy, to watch a one day league at Calzada Covered Court in Taguig. Despite the heavy rains, the volleyball addict in me decided to go and watch (again) the excitement street volleyball has to offer. After rendering overtime work in the morning, I rushed to Taguig to catch the games later in the afternoon.

Beezy happens to be the “road manager” of one of the participating teams, Team Y41. If you are familiar with Volle650, this team might ring a bell to your ear. Headed by former green archer, Martin Libot, a UAAP Best Receiver and a collegiate volleyball legend in his own right, this team is worth the miles I traveled. Although the main reason I went there was to see Beezy and have a glimpse of how his team plays, I can’t help but admire these young men as they parade their skills against high caliber street volley players. Seeing them having lunch together was a treat, for I saw how they treat each other outside the court. They were like brothers and sisters. Meeting this bunch of athletes was superb.

There were only four participating teams; Y41, MVP, Heartthrobs (not the real name of the team, but the adjective befits its members) and the local team of Brgy. Calzada. Despite the relatively small league, the performances of all these teams were otherwise, making the final match between MVP and Y41 seems to come from a gargantuan commercial league. Y41’s manager Jani was at edge of his seat as the final sets progress. Beezy’s team was one set behind, the match being a 3 setter, they must recover fast. MVP’s floor defense was flawless and they have very experienced attackers. But Y41 never lost their drive, determination and the “kiss my ace” attitude. We were cheering our hearts out. With their blocking and well calculated attack, Y41 eventually capped the match, 2 sets to 1 of MVP.

For the Nth time, I would like to personally send my endless gratitude to Beezy for inviting (never ending huh? Smiles), I’m looking forward for more; to the rest of the Y41 family for being so accommodating, thanks to you guys. And to Spikeithard as well, for giving volley fans like me an avenue to release our volleyball madness. Before, I was contented in watching volleyball on the TV, but now, I am living the ultimate volleyball fan life. Meeting all of you is one thing I will never, ever, regret. Peace out!
