Ligang Kalye - watching street volleyball

Though now being televised, some people still thinks that volleyball is not that popular among Filipinos. After all, we are a basketball crazy country. Addicted to boxing too thanks to the Pacman. While billiards has become very popular amongst Pinoys as well. On the other hand, volleyball has become a hit on the underground.

Last Saturday, I was able to catch the last few games of a volleyball tournament (often touted as one of the Ligang Kalye) held in Taguig. The concrete court was shabby. When it rains, it penetrates the roof so whatever action is taking place underneath had to be stopped. Watching this kind of street volleyball action was such a delight. I was able to see familiar faces from the National Open, former UAAP players, Volle650 participants, and other unknown people who are not afraid to spike it hard against the volleyball hotshots. Being surrounded by a whole lot of volleyball players is something I won’t forget. They were all nice and very accommodating.

Unlike a basketball crowd, the volleyball crowd during this tournament was rather smaller. Since everyone in the event was side by side, all the players would treat each other as if they were all in one big happy family of volleyball aficionados. Street volleyball has its own uniqueness that you couldn’t find in any other street sports. Volleyball can have its masculinity and femininity all at the same time (if you know what I mean).

It was so nice to watch competitive volleyball in the streets. Thanks to Beezy for inviting! I’m looking forward to watching more street tournaments with you guys. I hope that a time will come when all the volleyball sites out there can do a collaborative project or something. Why not, right?

hi setter_05!

unfrotunately, wala akong pictures to post, i opted not take because of some reasons… madalas pa, biglaan yung mga ganitong liga tsaka barangay or sk sponsored… i was just invited by beezy, a fellow spikeithard folk who happens to “manage” one of the playing teams…

kapag may may nag-invite uli, i’ll try to announce it, but don expect a “uaap-like” set-up ha…

take care always!!!
