Charo Soriano: A volleyball player worth remembering

Charo Soriano

11. Although you lost in the Finals, what can you say about the recently concluded V-
League especially with your stint for Ateneo?

Vleague is always a challenging tournament due to its increased level of play. As for the last conference, I was very proud of the team. We showed maturity and perseverance, even with the challenges and trials that we had to face.

12. What’s your stand on Thai imports? Do you think they are increasing the level of volleyball here in the Philippines? Do you think they are promoting volleyball in our country?
I am pro-Thai imports, evidently. Not just because Ateneo has a Thai import, but more broadly, because of the very fact that they do increase the level of play in our country, as well elevate the intensity of the game. However, these Thai imports can only teach us as much as we want to learn. If we close our minds to the fact that they can help us develop the sport in the Philippines, then we would never be able to learn from them. Why don’t we think of them as challengers, but in a more positive connotation? We should think of them as players who challenge us to perform better, to be more than what we think we can be.

13. How did it feel that Ateneo was the absolute crowd favorite last V-League conference that almost around 80-90% of the crowd in the Final Four and Finals were all rooting for you guys?
It was an incredible feeling, knowing that you have people who are there to cheer for you and support you all the way, regardless of the result. However, I felt very heartbroken, very sad, because the team wasn’t able to give our fans what they wanted – the gold. It’s very devastating knowing how you’ve let down most of the people watching and cheering for us…But, as I told my team. It’s not the end; it’s just the beginning. There will be a next time, a next opportunity.

14. Likewise, how does it feel being the player with the most fans?
It’s very humbling to have fans and I do believe that I have my fair share but, as I said before, I don’t believe I’m that famous yet.

15. What can you say about the Charonatics, your die hard fans?
I still smile whenever I hear “Charonatics”. I still haven’t quite gotten used to it yet. Hehe Anyway, the “Charonatics” are very much supportive. They are there in the arena for all the games of Ateneo. For me, they are my Vleague family, my best critics and my best defenders.

16. Tell us about your pastime and hobbies.
I love watching movies. Each one has a story to hear, to learn about, to enjoy. One time, I was able to help my friend make a movie script and it felt great to actually be on the other side of the coin, not the one watching it but the one making it. Much like in photography. Photography is an interest of mine since I years back. I was always into pictures, into images. It’s very fulfilling to be able to capture an image that tells a tale.

17. What was the last movie you watched?
88 minutes starring Al Pacino.

18. Early bird or night owl?
Night owl. 1000%.

19. Homebody, partyer, or someone in the middle?
Somewhere in the middle, depends on my current life situation.

20. What’s your chill out activity after a long day?
Watching movies.

21. What’s your usual Friday gimik?
Nothing regular.

22. What’s your favorite food and drinks?
Food? Anything spicy. Drinks? Anything sweet.

23. What’s your favorite restaurant?
People’s Palace (Thai restaurant)

24. What’s your favorite bar or Club?
Moksha and Ankies. It’s a small and intimate place where you can chill with your friends over good drinks and nice conversations.

25. What’s your favority Sports facility?
Moro Lorenzo

26. What’s your favorite local destination?
Boracay.

27. Where’s your dream destination in the world?
Bali.

28. Is it hard balancing academics and athletics at the same time? How’s your master study?
I won’t lie by saying I didn’t have a hard time at first. When I was a freshman, I was exposed to the competitive aspect of the sport, hence, the training regimen was all new to me. Before, it was difficult to adjust from my old lifestyle. However, after much practice and proper time management, I was able to cope. I think it’s all about setting your priorities and at the same time prioritizing them.

My MBA is still ongoing. I still have one more year to go. I feel extremely lucky to have the opportunity to take further studies in business administration in the Ateneo.

29. What was your course in college? Did you enjoying it? When you were a kid, what do you want to be? Are you fulfilling it? Or do you have plans of fulfilling it in the future?
I took up AB Economics in college. I enjoyed it because I learned about how the economy really works, from trade, to fiscal matters, to research and statistics, etc. It’s a very interesting course, actually.

30. Okay, let’s go back to volleyball. Who are the players you look up to or any idols?
International? Local?

I admire MicMic Laborte. For me, she is one of the most prominent volleyball players in our country. Her experiences have molded her into a very good coach. She knows how to interact with each and every member of the team, oftentimes adjusting to her personality and character.

Charo is really an inspiration to all those fans who at first was just admirers of the sport but because of Charo’s dedication to the sport has been drawn to to try and play the sport,Charo, from being a support to her team developed to be one of the Greatest player i have seen,i myself is one of them, when ive seen Men’s net height compared to my height,i was really discouraged to try the sport but when i c Charo play, her dedication and her will to improve her skills made me believe i can also be as good her,as of know i can spike quite good despite the height net and im mastering all Charo’s play,i even incorporated the Charo Soriano shriek koz i believe that the shriek forced you to really hit the ball hard, and i observe Jarin Segodine and some other gals are all now have their own distinct shriek, hehehe,i am really glad to have seen how Charo played, she’s my inspiration to do better,Charo and Wendy Anne Semana truly are the best thing that happened to Volleyball this past years and because of them many will be encouraged to play the sport and be as good as them..

my favorite QOute that came from Charo…
“To the critics, thank you for the criticisms. I deeply respect you opinion and am very much happy that you give time to find fault in some of the things that I do. Without your help, growth and improvement would not be possible”

i really like Charo Soriano- her heart and passion for volleyball is just unbelievable.madiskarte maglaro.napakasmart pa sumagot.i hope that i can still see her play volleyball one of these days.

Nice article; inspiring and enlightening

Every time I watched ADMU games I always see Charo running, jumping, attacking, blocking and even setting the play. Her energy amazes me; but more than that, her skill and disposition in the game. WIN or LOSE she gracefully accepts with a trace of smile on her face. It really shows the love she has for the game.

To Charo: I am now what you call a Charonatics! (hhmm, i’m also a Karlanatics (sounds like a flying school)

To Charo and the writer of this article: KUDOS!
