Watching the PVF National Open 2008 opening matches

June 30, 2008 – As I’ve said before, the end of June marks a week-long battle for volleyball supremacy to be contested at the PVF National Open 2008. After several years of absence, the National Open stages it’s comeback this year. Teams from Philippine National Police, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Navy, Philippine Army, FEU, St. Jude College, GTX, NCBA, RTU, RP Youth, and Klownz heeded the call of the PVF to adhere in the said event. The opening salvo featured four matches of the men’s division.

Game 1: GTX vs. PNP
The virtually unknown team named GTX made a roaring juvenile performance as it toppled the PNP in three straight sets with a whooping 23 point lead in the last set. Jersey #12 AJ Carson (quicker) and #5 Arvin Estoque lead GTX to win the match. I was able to ask Carson few questions just before the match ended. He said that their team was formed just recently for the National Open. The team’s roster came from the collegiate standouts of Angeles University Foundation (AUF), Holy Angel University and Pampanga Agricultural College, making them the “de facto” provincial team of our cabalen brothers. I see this team as a potential contender for the crown.

Game 2: NCBA vs. Philippine Navy
High jumping Navy team was the next squad to dig up a win against the young but promising NCBA spikers. Timbal(#5) and Altche(#8), both from the NCBA showed that they can catch up with the more experienced Navy team, but still, they were not able to pull things out to get a check mark. Former RP team setter Sherwin Meneses managed to convert most passes into excellent sets for Navy #7 and #10. The Philippine Navy won the match in three sets.

Game 3: SJC vs. RTU
From their stature and looks, the St. Jude College team seems babyish compared to the champions RTU, but hey, looks can really be deceiving. It was unexpected that these young players caught everyone by surprise as they took over the match and eventually winning it against RTU. SJC setter #9 was able to create great fakes, agitating the RTU blockers, and a lot of balls slammed on the RTU floor. Most of SJC’s style used “hiding” of attackers, making their opponent puzzled on where the ball would came from. Spiking his heart out was Billy Conde(#1) and with confusing tips was Sebastian(#2). RTU on the other hand tried their best with the leadership of Laja (#2) and Abdul (#9), winning them a set, but still not enough. SJC won the match after four sets.

Game 4: FEU vs. Philippine Army
The last game of the day was between two power teams, FEU and Phil. Army. The game lasted five sets, the Army topping the match. Headed by #3 Jonathan Bulaong and the leftee #9, the Army pulled it’s first win against the tough and prominent UAAP team. Edjet Mabbayad also made his contribution against his former team. However, the FEU Tamaraws didn’t gave the army veterans an easy win, to think that this team lost their star players due to graduation, upcoming Nestor Molate showed stellar performance. I guess their tradition of excellent sports trading proved to be instrumental in shaking the consciousness of the Army team, raising the number of sets played to five. But eventually, the Army prevailed.

Extra! Extra!
Notable players were seen in the coliseum. The likes of Jessie Lopez, Mary Jean Balse and Wendy Semana stayed for a while to watch the games. Special thanks go to Beezy and Pogssz for their very helpful insights that I also used in able to come up with is write-up. I enjoyed watching and exchanging stories with you!

I would just like to make a personal appeal to all the volleyball fans out there. Though the games were exciting because all the teams showed stamina and power, it is disappointing that only a handful of people(non-team members and staff) were there to see the games. Well, it’s a Monday, but I hope more and more will come to watch as the days go by, especially the games to be held this coming Saturday and Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. I believe that through watching, we are supporting the sport to thrive and progress here in our country. And for those who are interested in watching a men’s league, here is your chance to see the country’s top mens volleyball team strutting their stuffs. We all love volleyball, don’t we? So please do come and see the higher level of plays at PVF National Open 2008.

Anybody out there who can share with us some volleyball action photos?

gabun ba? sorry.. hehe.. mejo madami nga din ako hinmdi nailagay…

baka sa saturday and sunday games na uli ako manood… kitakits sa rizal memorial….

Wow! Special mention!

My insights:
Game 1: GTX vs. PNP
Halimaw si #5 of GTX! S2K!
Taas tumalon, trampoline malamang inaalmusal nun!
Player to watch out for.
Sa PNP team??? Ammmmm….

Game 2: NCBA vs. Philippine Navy
Talk about mismatches! I found out that NCBA was the 2008 PVF INTERCOLLEGIATE VOLLEYBALL runner-up– next to RTU. I guess the Navy were just too tough for them. Ikaw ba naman magkaron ng mga binti na wala ng ginawa kundi kumampay ng kumampay sa tubig… Tataas tumalon!

Game 3: SJC vs. RTU
This was my fave game, pareho kasing college-based teams.
I must say RTU is very strong, but their weakness was their blocking.
Hirap sila bumasa ng combination plays ng SJC, yun ang nagpatalo sa kanila.

Game 4: FEU vs. Philippine Army
All I can say is that FEU is still a team; they may not be as strong as they used to be, but they are slowly getting there. We all know that they already lost their key players, but for newbies they did well.

Hope I can see future games.
Saya! sayang lang hindi televised at parang bodega ang venue.
Just shows how poorly funded the sport is here in out country…

UPDATE! UPDATE!

ACCORDING TO PVF, ALL THE REMAINING GAMES SCHEDULED UNTIL SUNDAY WILL BE PLAYED IN THE RTU GYMNASIUM, IT WILL NOT GO BACK TO RIZAL MEMORIAL COLISEUM.

SO THAT’S CLEAR, SA RTU NA LANG TAYO MAGKIKITAKITS! :D

you know.. we should be proud of Adamson team..

..why?! because they defied all misconceptions about volleyball..

that is..
..obese can’t play volleyball
..malnourished won’t be able to serve pass
through the net
..our ethnic brothers haven’t tried
playing volleyball yet
..and hippos can be serve specialist as
well..ehheheheh

sorry, just want to vent my disappointment not seeing Em-orn and Baulee face in the Finals, ehheheh

but joking aside, they really inspire many people, they showed that if you really persevere and if your really determined to do something, you’ll be able to surpass anything even being physically challenged.that’s why i tell my chubby teammates don’t worry,if it’s hard for you to be an outside hitter, then you can be a quicker like Adamson,or if still you cant reach the net, then we can just turn you to a serve specialist, like Adamson,HAHAHHAHAAH!!!

winner insights, sly. good job.

i saw three afternoon games yesterday (july 2nd). the men were wound up pretty tight–they were jumping around like they were 6′5 and whamming them balls pretty hard. awesome!
then came the women–i underestimated the oldies. ^_^ i thought that zenaida gal would be a liability on the court because of her sluggishness, but she did her job pretty well. ms. “len” was all fired up–i mean kahit anong klaseng bola ang ipasa sa kaniya, talagang papatayin niya. that was really coooooooooooooool.
and then there was airforce team…who woulda thought that ace setters semana and serafica would be in one team??? 0_o i’m losing my mind now. lol. poor nene bautista got the bulk of the serves from the navy, especially from micmic laborte and joan botor, but she was an offensive powerhouse. i really hope she improves her floor defense if she’s to become an outside hitter for the national team.
ayos ang line-up ng army! lahat sila puedeng maging starting 6! it’s a pity i didn’t see much of jen bohawe slamming some of them balls.
the national youth team are tall, but they were quite clumsy.
i heard they lowered the pressure of the balls too, as per the new fivb rule.

gosh, i’ve still got goosebumps! nginitian ako ni balse! well, um, actually ‘yung katabi ko, pero parang ako na rin ang nginitian niya. hanggang ngayon natutunaw pa rin akoh. i’m a complete man now. ang gusto kong gf ay volleyball player!

Sabi ng friend ko nanaood siya kahapon ng Game sa RTU - 2nd game bet. navy and air force kaloka raw ang spiker ng Navy- yun may bundle sa right leg na mukhang vietnamese - ang dami raw chances na bola ang not over in a very crucial set pa raw 23-23 then puro not over ang palo, mukhang malaks pero parang kabado daw at wala raw yata presents of mind. ha Ha Ha. Ano ba yan.
