I checked out most of online newspapers today just to see what’s under the Sports sections. It’s pretty obvious that everyone is still savoring Pacquiao’s ninth round TKO victory over David Diaz. The match was entitled “Lethal Combination” and it took place last June 28, 2008 at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino. I was able to watch the delayed telecast last Sunday (already knowing that the Pacman won over the radio coverage). It was a great fight every Filipino boxing fanatic is bound to remember. I also noticed Pacman’s English skills are getting better every time!
Going to back to Sports news, I was actually hoping to get some news about the PVF National Volleyball Open 2008. Sadly (and unfortunately expected), there weren’t too many newspapers covering the event. The only article I came across was this:
From The Manila Bulletin online (July 1, 2008):
Army tossers whip FEU Tams in opener
by Francis SantiagoFormer UAAP MVP Edjet Mabbayad flashed his same old deadly form to lead the Philippine Army to a thrilling 27-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22 victory over his former team Far Eastern University at the start of the 2008 National Open Volleyball Championships yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Mabbayad, who led the Tamaraws to three straight UAAP championships during his college days, played the role of tormentor for his former team this time as he exploded for 15 hits highlighted by two blocks.
“It’s hard for me at the start (to play against FEU), pero ganun talaga. Laro lang naman ito,” said Mabbayad who graduated from FEU with a degree of sports recreational management.
The Army men blew hot and cold, taking the first two sets without so much of a problem, but wavered in the third after falling into a maze of errors.
The Army men, however, regained their form in the fourth set with Mabbayad conspiring with Jonathan Bulaon, Emilio Reyes and Rico De Guzman in several attacks en route to their first win in the tournament sponsored by Salonpas, Mikasa, POC and PSC and organized by the Philippine Volleyball Federation.
“This is a good win for us as we prepare for the AFP-PNP Olympics in October,” said Army mentor Romulo Reforendo, whose wards took the biggest lead of the game, 24-14, in the second set.
In other men’s result, Philippine Navy banked on Edser Penetrante to beat National College of Business and Arts, 25-16, 25-16, 25-23 in the second match, while Pampanga downed Philippine National Police, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-15.
Saint Jude College rallied past Inter-Collegiate men’s champion Rizal Technological University, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-15, to join the early winners.
And oh, here’s another one from The Sunday Times (June 29, 2008):

EriQ, Beezy, and I were there.
I was pretty much amazed with how the FEU team performed even without their core players from the previous UAAP seasons. Most of the players inside their court were newbies, but they stepped-up even snatching a set from the Army.
By the way is FEU’s new setter? The guy wearing the #2 jersey?
Their new setter is good, I was also impressed with their new libero.
Still, lots of work for the new squad!

yes, i’m aware of that, but here in the phils, they call it “4-2.” ilang beses na akong kinorek when i kept saying “6-2″ so for the sake everyone understanding me, i stuck to “4-2″ ^^
anyhoohoo, i watched two games again this afternoon. i was only able to catch the 5th set of the match between rtu and klownz when i came in. i must say, the color-combo jersey of klownz looks pretty sappy to me.
interesting army-air force match. the army packed a lot of firepower, but they didn’t have a consistent floor defense (bunag and the carolino sisters couldn’t control the ball well). when they brought in laguilles for boto, it was a big turnaround. they not only improved their digging and reception, but the air force started crumbling floor-defense wise (though laguilles didn’t get much sets from salak and iratay). it’s interesting to see some of the guys swapping positions (balse and bunag, lilet mabbayad and that certain josh), but somehow for me it reflected a crumbling defense because they kept putting the power hitters on the outside hitting position. i didn’t see a lot of combination plays or effective quick sets (however, there were quite a lot of slide hits, even from some regular outside hitters).
some grumbling of mine: while i was watching today, i kept hearing a lot of arrogant and ignorant comments from gals seated behind me. i mean, tama ba namang sabihin “hay naku, labas-pasok si hannah (suarez), parang tanga.” helleur!? líbero kaya siya? grrrr! and they even went further, “palitan na nga ‘yan si hannah, puro error”, “panira talaga ‘yang hannah na ‘yan”, yadah yadah yadah. gusto kong sabihin “ay alam ko na, mga inday. kaya si hannah ang laging nakikita ninyo dahil sa ka-engotan ninyo ay ang ‘yung damit lang niyang naiiba sa iba ang napapansin ninyo. hala, balik sa kusina!”
and then there were two guys yesterday who were criticizing the RP YOUTH team. “ay ang tanga! malapit na ang olympics, tapos ganiyan ang laro nila?”, said one. sagot ‘yung isa, “sila ba ang national team?” “oo pinalitan ‘yung buong team e.” sabay banat ng “hindi ba kailangan champion ka sa asian games para makapaglaro sa olympics?” “oo nga, sila ang champion!”
oh my days! give me strength!
yes, i did try to correct them. pero what can i do? mismong coach ng women’s team dati ng feu at dating player din sa feu ang ayaw patalo sa akin.
i was only able to see the men’s battle for third this morning and i had to rush back home. the philippine navy were taller but they made a lot of unforced errors. the army’s líbero (kenneth manahan, ex-feu líbero) was very bad. he was not even a receiver on several rotations, having to stand behind the two outside hitters and the opposite hitter, who all were the primary receivers. he made a lot of errors, and edjet mabbayad was better than him. nonetheless his team won. (da best talaga si edjet mabbayad. it’s unfortunate he wasn’t given sets to the backrow).
are some of the members of klownz former members of the UP squad? i think i recognize at least 3 guys there.

does anyone know how can i get hold of EDSER PENETRANTE?his email or phone number would suffice.I am his friend way back his FEU days and im already living here in the US. By next YEAR i’ll be home and hopefully, i will be able to meet him. Please i need your help. Many thanks
