So you see, these amateur photographers are the unsung heroes when it comes to promoting the Shakey’s V-League. So maybe they should also be treated with more respect and be given the same privileges as the pros from the Media. Unlike what happened to Joey Villaluz, better known as Gearhead:
Rant… and Rave!!!
I arrived a little late at The Arena for my midday sojourn with the Lady Eagles and the Benilde Blazers, so went directly to the counter to get my ticket. I saw the sign for the P50 admission price, paid in haste and headed for the photographer’s section at ringside.
I was quite surprised to notice that the usual chairs for the photogs have now gone. Then I was asked by a person manning the entrance if what media outfit I am representing, and may he have a look at my ID. I just said I left my ID at the car coz it wasn’t required before. Then he pointed me to the other side at the next level up from the previous fotog location.
When I got there, I was again accosted by another person and asked to see my ticket. When I presented mine he said it was for the Lower Box section. I said mine is the P50 ticket which previously was good already for ringside. He said it was now P80 for those seats. Well, it missed me that the quarterfinals started last Sunday so the new prices had already taken effect since then. So when I paid mine I just assumed that P50 ticket is good for ringside already.
I had to be content the whole time with shooting from the far corners of the Lower Box as the middle seats had already been occupied by then. It’s good I only intended to stay for the first game so I just made do with the situation. The life of us amateur photographers just got a little bit harder. Oh well, we just need to be thankful they allow us to shoot at the venue if at all… coz in other arenas you can’t even get your gear past the gates! Thank God for small graces!

Maybe the ringside area specially the spot behind the banners can be shared by both the pros and the amateurs. Just maybe. The V-League management is doing what they have to do. Both security-wise and when it comes to promoting the league. As we reach the semis and finals of Shakey’s V-League Season 5, expect more and more people to watch the games. Hopefully, the league will gain more Media coverage. More importantly, hopefully more fans will continue to support the league in their own small ways.
If you think you should be given a special V-League Press Pass, then just get in touch with someone from the management.
Here’s another photo I’ve taken the last time I was at the Arena…

totoo? sad naman.. pero sana they’ll be considerate naman if amateurs will take photos from the bleachers….
Hmm, that’s a good idea. Sige, I’ll make a 1024 x 768 version of it para maging wallpaper.
Although I have acquired press pass…
At saka bawal na daw ang flash photography during a game… any kind of camera basta na may flash… Eto for the audience to… This I can understand kasi nakaka-distract sa players ang flash ng camera.
If you get an Inquirer or Phil.
My dad is a photographer for the Inquirer. One time, he let Marc use one of his unpublished photos for Spikeihard.
Marc sent their management an email with my dad’s address on CC about how they are violating digital and photo copyright by using my dad’s pic without permission nor citation. The next time my dad covered their league (which is once in a blue moon, by the way, mas importante kasi sa print media ang PBA at PBL kesa V-League), sorry nang sorry PR person nila.
Pero from the looks of it, hindi sila ganun ka-concerned sa online PR, even though big companies like SEAir and Dell (and more) go out of their way to invite bloggers to their events just to get online mileage. But then again, those are big companies, so I guess iba parin yun may magaling na marketing team talaga na mag-aadvise to go for long-term PR plans than panandaliang profit lang
I left a comment on your wife’s post on the matter, and I’m just pasting it here:
After going through your photos and write-ups, I have to revise my last statement - this site offers much more than just a little media mileage. You’ve got some pretty good photos in your gallery.
Woah! I saw your LightChasers Photography website and it’s cool. And looking at your folio, it’s pretty obvious that you’re a pro
Thanks for your insight. That’s precisely my point too! And the thing that I really could not quite understand is why make a “no press pass, no photo taking” rule when I really have never seen The Arena flock with so many photographers from the media recently.
But then again, I really haven’t watched the V-League games lately so I wouldn’t know. Nakakatamad na nga talaga.
*V LEAGUE IS BEING AIRED AT NBN 4 - PRACTICALLY, 80% OF HOUSEHOLDS RARELY WATCH THAT CHANNEL AND THE GAMES ARE BEING INTERRUPTED BY PRESS CONFERENCES AND THE LIKES…
*V LEAGUE RARELY LANDS ON THE FRONT PAGES OF THE SPORTS SECTIONS OF THE LEADING BROADSHEETS (THEY ONLY COVERS A MEAGER SPACE AS COMPARED TO THE SPACES CONSUMED BY ARTICLES DEDICATED TO BASKETBALL, GOLF AND BOXING)… MUCH WORSE ON THE TABLOIDS…
*V LEAGUE CANNOT BE COMPARED TO THE POPULARITY OF UAAP DESPITE ITS HIGHER LEVEL OF PLAYS…
*THE V LEAGUE WEBSITE IS DOING GOOD, BUT I THINK THAT IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO RAISE THE AWARENESS LEVEL OF PEOPLE REGARDING THE LEAGUE…
TAPOS PAGBABAWALAN PA YUNG AMATEURS?
DON’T THEY REALIZE HOW THESE “MERE BLOGGERS” HELPED NOT JUST THE V-LEAGUE BUT ALSO THE VOLLEYBALL CONDITION HERE IN THE COUNTRY?
ISN’T IT UNFAIR?
I’M JUST STATING WHAT GOES ON MY MIND….
@eriQ: Really funny to me that you mentioned about the press conference coz I was watching V-league kanina din! And it got interrupted by the Malacanang press conference. But hey, that’s important news naman!
Hindi ka rin galit noh… hahah
OO NAMAN, NO DOUBT ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE.. KAYA LANG… BASTA…
SANA MAGING CONSIDERATE NAMAN SILA… HINDI DIN NAMAN SILA GAANO NABIBIGYAN NG PRIORITY SA BROADSHEETS, WHEREAS SA MGA BLOGS, THEY ARE BEING PROMOTED UNCONDITIONALLY… WE’RE NOT LOOKING FOR RECOGNITION, JUST THE APPROPRIATE TREATMENT…
[...] “A series of unfortunate events at the Shakey’s V-League” part 2, you should read part 1 first. And oh, you should also know what “to accost” means as Joey Villaluz (better [...]
KUYA SPIKEY, I’M REALLY STARTING TO GET PISSED OFF BY THOSE SENSELESS POLICIES… SORRY TO USE THAT WORD BUT THAT’S JUST WHAT I THINK…
THESE KIND OF RULES ARE SIGNS OF “PAGMAMAGANDA”….
AND WITH “PAGMAMAGANDA” GOES A LOT OF BAD THINGS….
HEHEH…. @ THE GODDESSES, DIBA? PARANG PAGMAMAGANDA YUN? HAHAHA
you said it right. mukhang me nagmamaganda nga. ang dami namang not too radical or compromise solutions dun sa stated reason/s nila for the restrictions daw.
that’s a keyword… COMPROMISE
Eto lang ha! Mas nakikita pa nga ng mga fans ang photos nila kuya Joey at ibang so called “Amateur Photogs” (kasama na ako dun) kaysa dun sa ibang media such as newspapers…
San nila madalas nakikita yung mga photos namin? Sa mga kanya kanyang multiply or other blog sites (such as spikeithard.com), volleyball dedicated FORUMS (such as vleague.tk)Sports sites such as rpsports.com And dun sa official site ng V-league mismo… Where I, Dondi & other so called “amateur photogs” contribute photos!
NO BART!!! You’re NOT one of the amateur photogs… kasi you’re one of the pros na!! Hehe, hindi ka na ma-reach
Joke lang!
Hahahaha! Kung PRO ako! Edi PRO na rin kayu! Still learning and re-learning pa rin!
Hay naku… you’re on your way na, I tell you that. You’re one of the more, if not the most, dedicated sports photographers around. Dedication is one thing, talent is another. And both showed dun pa lang sa mga film shots mo pa dati not too long ago.
Mamaya nga eh kasama ka na dun sa mga me reserved/priority seats sa Arena… and kami eh sa sidelines na lang. Hehe!
@Joey: FYI lang, Bart already has a V-league Press Pass as the official photographer ng vleagueDOTtk. So you see, hindi naman siguro ganun ka “strict” ang management. There’s still hope! I know for a fact na si Keith, Sherwin, and Edison Ching are very friendly and approachable.
LOL
What???? Will this same rule apply when UAAP starts?
Thanks Michael…. I’m just about to try sports photography and was planning to buy a long lens for this (loved your pictures) and shoot from the sidelines. I guess now I’d have to settle from the audience side. Hopefully my pictures would still be nice.
bkt gnun.? d na nga mapanood minsan ng maayos tpos bwal pa ung mgpicture?! bad3p un.!
Bart,
Supremo
The thing with the media is that it would be the editors call on which pictures and articles they will put. In fairness to these media photographers, madami naman silang nakukuha is just that limited lang talaga malalagay sa pahayagan because of space.
At kung wala kang writer na magbebeat sa V-League for the papers, then usual press release pa din malalagay sa newspapers sa umaga.
And for the above question, you have to affliated with a website that covers the V-League such as this and others.
