Of course, I did not take her bait and in fact, I said the following points in the interview:1. Politics have always been mixed with the Olympics, i.e. US-ally boycott of Moscow Olympics, East-bloc boycott of UK Olympics, the tragic terrorism against jews in the Berlin Olympics, student bombings in Seoul torch relay, and protests along Turin winter Olympics relay.
2. I also told her I wasn’t worried of my security, I will carry the torch in Xinjiang province, Northwest of China which is next to Tibet in terms of level of insurgency, I know though that the Chinese government will not allow anything to happen to the torchbearers.
3. I also said I wished China all the success for the Olympics because they deserve it after all the hard work they’ve done since they have been awarded as host country in July 2001. Beijing is just so modern now and the architecture is amazing.
Anyway, naturally, you can always do a story to fit your objective. Not to say I find anything wrong with it. It’s just that I think it was a bit less objective. You can read a story about all this and listen to the interview as well over here.
Attached (to the email sent to Spikeithard) is an interesting write-up in a purely Chinese magazine over here. Its in Chinese which though I can speak now, I still can’t read nor understand so I have no idea what it says. Also attached is the monthly article I write about the Olympics. I love writing this. If you happen to be in Beijing, I can show them to you.
Cheers,
Marco
