Ateneo de Manila improves volleyball recruitment

The Ateneo de Manila University is known for being one of the premier schools who is good in basketball, badminton and football. Over the years, the school has won numerous championships in both sports, and is considered as perennial contenders for the three. Special mention to football, wherein the school dominates the sport be it grade school, high school or college.

This year though, aside from the mentioned sports, the school has tried to make a statement by recruiting high school standouts in a sport that is rapidly becoming popular, volleyball.

Aside from the player I featured a few weeks ago named Xavier Conrad Senoren, the school has been succesful in recruiting Duane Craig Teves and Rey Angelo Africa both from Canossa Academy-Lipa. Xavier Conrad Senoren will be a good addition in the line-up being a tall open spiker and so as Duane Craig Teves who is a good hitter as well. Rey Angelo Africa’s entry to the team is very much fitting as the team lacks a legitimate setter. With a line-up so deep which includes last UAAP’s 2nd and 3rd Best Scorer Andre Joseph Pareja and Joseph Michael De Joya as well as the then-setter now hard hitter Timothy James Santo Tomas, a taller and stronger Katipunan team is expected come UAAP Season 71 together with perennial contenders UP and FEU as they try to enter the Final Four in UAAP History.

In the distaff side, the Ateneo Women’s Volleyball Coaching Staff has been succesful in recruiting five high school standouts. The first one is the tall Gretchen Ho of Immaculate Concepcion Academy who is a versatile and powerful hitter. Next are the two Saint Scholastica College girls namely Fille Saint Merced Cainglet and Angeline Gervacio who are likewise powerful and versatile hitters. Angilene Gervacio is a very powerful spiker as she won the Best Attacker in Women’s Volleyball League and in Women’s National Collegiate Athletics Association. Fille Saint Merced Cainglet was a vital cog for the Junior Scions as she led Saint Scholastica’s College to championshipsand was hailed MVP for three consecutive years in Women’s Volleyball League and two consecutive years in Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association. The next two girls will be coming from the two-time Shakey’s Girls’ V-League National Champion Hope Christian High School. The first one is Melissa Gohing who is the open spiker of the team and the libero of the National Capital Region in the Palarong Pambansa 2007. The last recruit of Ateneo is none other than Jamenea Ferrer who was hailed as Best Setter and MVP in the Shakey’s Girls’ V-League.

The Ateneo Lady Eagles made the Final Four last year and has deeply lost six important players in Maria Rosario Soriano, Patricia Lynn Taganas, Karla Bello, Bianca Katrina Sison, Stephanie Gabriel and Trisha Anne Therese Limgenco. But, with the recruitment of their management, a lot has been expected again of the Katipunan-based spikers. Since a lot of schools lost a lot of vital players in their team also, and that the Ateneo Lady Eagles recruited almost all of the highly recruited high school standouts, it is but natural that people will expect a lot from the Lady Eagles next year. On the other side of things, these girls are lucky cause they will be trained by the legendary and new Ateneo Head Coach Roger Gorayeb. These girls will be trained to be the best that they can be both mentally and physically. Come to think of it, Jamenea Ferrer will fit well with the Ateneo team after having lost Karla Bello and Trish Limgenco, the team’s setters. Likewise, they are in need of a legitimate versatile hitters that will replace Charo Soriano, which will be the role of both Fille Cainglet, Gretchen Ho, Melissa Gohing and Angeline Gervacio.

It is interesting to note that Ateneo de Manila University is now taking the volleyball competition seriously and is contributing to the promotion of Philippine Volleyball. With this revamping of Ateneo de Manila, the other teams will be deeply inspired to recruit as well and will make the competition even tougher in tournaments. Hence, strengthening and nourishing the volleyball skills of our girls, who might compete in international tournaments soon.

Jindarat Kanchana will play for Ateneo for the Preliminaries. I don’t know if they are still keen on getting Nurak Nokputta as guest player for the Quarter-Finals.

bbol :
March 24th, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Is jindarat Kanchana good also in blocking???

bbol :
March 24th, 2008 at 2:41 pm

For this V-league season5 - they need reliable blocker/spiker-in-one.

Miles Dy :
March 24th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Miss Jindarat Kanchana has the passion and heart. She’s a strong open spiker. Not as strong as Miss Jaroensri Bualee but more of a smart and sharp shooter. She can block but not that much of a Miss Lithawat Kesinee. What we can get from her is her floor defense, serving and of course the attacks. Gelling won’t be a problem with the Ateneo team since she is the Assistant coach of the team for two years now.

bbol :
March 24th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

But that what had happened to La Salle - they had Arreerat…what Coach Ramil expected from her were her floor defense, service, and attacks(coz they had Hernandez/Datuin and Alarca for blocking job but Ateneo has no enough counterparts, they only got Pascual…I think Ateneo needs blockers…

slytherinz :
March 24th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

i wish Kanchana can match up Intuan’s court smart and power, ive not seen her on tv but in the games ive watched in youtube, you can see how heavy her spikes are that it can blast open blocks, she got injured in their UST game, did she recover?can she play volley or did that incident stopped her from playing, she’s pretty pa namn..hihi

Miles Dy :

Yeah. Ateneo really needs a good middle blocker. But it’s not yet over. Their original guest player, Nurak Nokputta, the team captain of Thailand before, might play for Ateneo come quarter finals. So we will just wait and see. Come to think of it, no one wil get eliminated naman in the preliminaries.

Why was that during last season’s v-league, the ground defense of ateneo was great but when UAAP came, it weakened?…maybe because you can’t dig a hard-hit, fast ball if it’s not checked(slowed) by the blocker…

yes!! brighter future for ateneo’s team!!! dikdikan na ang labanan next season. i heard la salle will have its comeback daw, any news from la salle camp?

Miles Dy :

Yeah. I agree. The Ateneo-La Salle rivalry will be relived in Volleyball next season. Haha. Although La Salle has an advantage with veterans and because they lost only one player in their line-up. I wonder how Ateneo will fare against them. Haha.

bakit walang mythical 5 ang uaap v-ball?

[Reply]

Miles Dy :
March 24th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

In fact there is, it’s just Mythical Six. But UAAP doesn’t follow that because they just give awards to certain players who are good in a certain skill.

it’s just sad that we still have to wait until November this year to see this gurlz play, sana may preview nasa kanila,sa v-league,me mga kasing ganda ba ni “bello” at “soriano”?heheheh,ni “taganas”?just to be fair to all graduating players, hehehe, and sison?

hahaha toingkz!!!

sana sa coming days they will have a report on philippine national team sa volleyball players. why is it that if not all, almost all players sa national team natin galing uste? kase i remember one time, sa teledyaryo sports on nbn4, they have this primer for v-league i think it was october 2007, ang guest nila were players from dlsu. sam(the host) asked jacky alarca about “why most players of ust are members of our national team, hindi ba kayo inimbitahan?” and when alarca answered as if there is something fishy on how our national players were picked. i think alarca was pointing out that there should be an open try out for all schools and not on an invitational basis. this was just my observation when i watched the interview. i hope there will be a sort of an “expose” on our v-ball national team players. and who are our national players ba? saan schools sila galing? who picked our national players? ahay, ang dami kung tanong. tulog na nga ako!

coach august Sta.

kalwonder :
March 24th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

*why is it that if not all, almost all players sa national team natin galing uste?

Because it was based on individual talent and not by stats only.
Because UST has the best individual talent. Nagkataon lang na nagkasama-sama sa UST ang mga players na ‘to. If you will scatter them to different schools they will shine and be the main players.
If dismal ang performance nila the fact na some of them are national team members, it happens, just like the inconsistency of Denise tan’s performance. She have had health problems during the early rounds and had a hard time coping or gelling with the team’s gameplan during the later part of the season,
We may doubt her because of her performance last season, but with her championship and international experience, she has proven that she can deliver big time when the team needs her most, just like their last game.
I still believe semana is the best setter based on performance last season kaso 6-2 laro nila. Serafica kasi e full time setter kaya based on stats she is the best setter. Rhea the blue chip rookie which was heavily recruited by la salle for sure will earn her name if she is playing on other team. Based on raw talents and not on stats she has an edge over Serafica, Rhea is obviously, quicker, stronger, more flexible and leaps higher than Serafica.
The 12-2 record of UST is not a bad performance for a team with national players.
This is also happening on other teamsports. Best example of this is the USA basketball team. They have the best individual talent but they are having a hard time in dominating the game.

*alarca answered as if there is something fishy on how our national players were picked.

I don’t think alarca will speak such statements like that.

*i hope there will be a sort of an “expose” on our v-ball national team players.

With the popularity the sport is gaining. Kaya mo pa bang gumawa ng irregularities na hindi mapapnsin? I don’t think there is an anomaly on how the players are being selected. What’s the gain? Kikita ba sila?

kalwonder :
March 24th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

During the last UAAP season I saw some players who are national player calibers based on ‘individual raw talent’ (not by mastery of fundamentals, experience, and statistics)

2 from UST
2 “ FEU
1 “ Ateneo
1 “ La Salle
1 “ UP

Solid_FEU :
March 25th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

i also noticed that kalwonder. and these are the players, for me, that does have what it takes to be a member of our national team.

UST— BALSE, BERNAL and TABAQUERO (of course, the talent of these ladies are exceptional)

FEU— SEMANA, DAQUIS and MORADA (these ladies will give their all to win, SEMANAs talent is incomparable, she can attack and can give a very good set as well, DAQUIS is very clever and smart everytime she play and MORADA is very effective and efficient in the middle.)

ADMU— SORIANO ( whew shes hot at the back, she leaps very high)

DLSU— ALARCA (shes not only good and solid in blocking but shes good in drop balls too)

UP— CASTAñEDA (shes not only beautiful but she has a very powerful spike)

ADU— BENTING (this little girl can also fly high and can hit hard)

slytherinz :
March 25th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

i beg to disagree, maliliit talaga players natin, ang highest leaper natin ay mabloblock lang ng hop ng isang cuban or chinese, pano kaya tayo mananalo kung maliliit tayo, kelnagn na lang siguru natin maka-develop ng lightning speed serves, ehehhehe

kalwonder :
March 25th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

nabago yung post ko
ewan ko bat naging ganoon pero ang post ko talaga is

5 from UST
2 ” FEU
1 ” Ateneo
1 ” La salle
1 ” UP

yan lang yung mga nakita ko sa last season lineup ng mga teams. based yan sa ‘individual raw talent’ hindi by mastery of fundamentals, experience, and statistics.

kalwonder :
March 25th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

I admire adamson. Volleyball is a team sport.
Adamson earned their 12-2 record and spot in the finals because of their teamwork not by their individual talent.

di nga siya open try out pero lahat naman ay naimbitahan. And lahat ng players ng lasalle ay naimbitahan kaso ayaw ni coach Ramil kasi nga maaapektuhan ang training nila.

aah, ganun pala. sayang hindi ko napanood yung v-league primer the day after kase yung guest ni salema refran sa teledyaryo sports nun is ang coach mismo and the ust players. someone told me na dun daw sinagot ni coach august yung question about our national players. :-( ininvite daw si alarca pero hindi siya nag tryout kase maapektohan daw grades niya. iba kase ang training sa dlsu, then another time spent with coach august.

Don’t forget about their new coach; Roger Gorayeb of SSC… hehe =)

Ateneo is an emerging vBall powerhouse… wow.

class mate po bah sila or team mates lang dahil. bakit si melissa gohing sa La Salle pumunta

I agree. With a new coach and talented players, Ateneo’s headed to be up there. Reminds me so much of their basketball team. Diba? 2006 they lost their three kings JC Intal, Doug Kramer and Macky Escalona similar to Karla Bello, Charo Soriano and Patti Taganas, but the next year, 2007, their UAAP Men’s Basketball Team overachieved even with a lot of rookies. I hope that will be the case for the Ateneo Lady Eagles.

looks like ust will be having a very hard time to shine in season 71. almost all the teams have become stronger.

Miles Dy :

Everyone will have a hard time. In fact, almost all 8 teams next season are strong. NU and UE might look weak but they will not lose any player as well as DLSU who lost only one. UP lost Castaneda, Manukay and Crescini but the recruiting powers of UP will always be respected. FEU is FEU, they’re always strong.

I just chatted with Pu earlier and just so you all know, it’s really hard to converse to a person who doesn’t really speak fluent in English or Tagalog and so, I talk to her the way she speaks so we can understand each other. Here’s how we conversed:

e_v_a_n: sawatdee ka!
pu: sawatdee ka
e_v_a_n: you play in Ateneo?
pu: yes
e_v_a_n: how about Kesinee, Bualee, Areerat, and Nokputta?
pu: no come me and bualee only (they won’t come except for Bualee)
e_v_a_n: Bualee? I thought next time Bualee?
e_v_a_n: Bualee play in Vietnam?
pu: yes
e_v_a_n: where are you now?
pu: now me here phi
e_v_a_n: wen did u go here?
pu: today (March 27)
e_v_a_n: what time?
pu: 6:30 pm

and I jokingly asked her…

e_v_a_n: I have pasalubong?
pu: ano? (she knows some Tagalog words)
e_v_a_n: did u bring chocolates for me?
pu: haha
pu: me sleep na
pu: bye
pu: see u soon
e_v_a_n: ok. remember my name ha?
pu: opo
e_v_a_n: i will see you on Sunday
pu: why?
e_v_a_n: u have game
pu: yes
pu: but me training only 2day
e_v_a_n: why?
pu: because in Thailand me stop play
e_v_a_n: ah
pu: me sleep na
pu: bye
pu: ingat

end of our chitchat. Ü
