Volleyball 101
Got this list of volleyball terms from here. Common terms used in the game of volleyball:
- Ace - A serve not returned by the opposing team.
- Attack - An attempt by the offensive team to end the rally by hitting the ball to the floor of the defensive team.
- Block - A skill executed above the net by one or more players to prevent a spike from entering their side of the court.
- Dig - A basic skill used to receive an opponents attack. (Also called a bump)
- Down Ball - An attacked ball the blockers judge as not having enough speed or good enough court position to require a block.
- Foul - Any rule infraction that causes the referee to blow the whistle.
- Forearm Pass - A basic skill where the ball is rebounded off the players forearms to the desired target.
- Free Ball - A ball returned by the opposing team that cannot be attacked and, instead, is passed over the net.
- Hit- Another term used for an attack or spike.
- Kill- An attack not returned by the defense.
- Overhead Pass - A basic skill where the ball is contacted above the head with both hands. It can be used on defense, serve receive and setting.
- Rally - The time from the start of the serve until the play is ended by a point or side out.
- Rally Scoring - An alternative scoring system incorporated in the deciding game of a match where a point is scored when either team wins the rally.
- Rotation - When a team earns a side out, the team moves one position clockwise on the court before the next serve.
- Serve - A basic volleyball skill used to put the ball into play.
- Set - An overhead pass directed to an attacker.
- Side out - When the serving team loses the rally and the receiving team gets the ball and the next serve attempt. (Does not result in a point unless rally scoring is being used.)
- Spike - A powerful attack that incorporates jumping and hitting the ball into the opponents court with one hand.
- Sprawl - A defensive technique used to retrieve a ball in front of the defender.
- Tip - An offspeed shot used by the attacker directed at the holes in the defense. Also called a dump or dink.

two days ago, i was heading home from work, naisipan ko lang na kumain muna sa mcdo sa noveleta cavite, it just so happended that there was an interbarangay volleyball tournament happening in front of it so nanood na din ako… natuwa ako kasi parang yun yung pinaka counterpart ng street basketball. tapos meron ding certain culture ang mga baranggay volleyball o kahit anong small leagues. although hindi ganoon kapolished at technically lavish ang ganitong palaro, exciting pa din.
idagdag ko lang yung mga terminologies at cultures na nakalimutan ko na pero naalala ko uilt.. hehehe
1. “pektus” - ito ay yung parang bibigyan mo ng special effect ang spike o serve mo para mahirapang kunin ng kalaban
ex. May pektus ang spike nya, ang galing!
Pektusan mo ang serve mo.
2. pagkatapos mareceive ang bola at papunta na ito sa setter, parang cue na yun para magsalita ang isa o higit pa ng - - - “o, set! set!”
3.”puto” - ito ay kapag na-dig ng maayos ang isang powerful spike, karaniwang mga audience ang sumisigaw nito
ex. during a highscool intramurals matapos makuha ng isang player ang spike ng isang senior:
sophomore students(sabay-sabay): “Aaaaahhh! Puutoo!”
4. “bayo” or “palo” - literal translation ng spike o hit
5. kapag naka-score, magpupunta ang lahat sa gitna, pagdidikitin ang mga kamay tapos ay sisigaw ng….”hoss!!”… ewan ko kung ano yun pero yun ang madalas kong marinig…
6. “wallop” pero yung iba “one loop” daw hehe -

7. usually, walang libero
8. may certain leagues na mixed - babae, lalake, bdaing, at tomboy pwede sa isang team
9. madalas, tosser pa din ang tawag sa setter
10. may mga posing-posing emote-emote pa yang mga yan kapag nagseserve na.. hehe..
eto ay yung mga napapansin ko lang sa mga liga sa cavite.. meron pa bang iba? hehe

“madalas palandian ng serve, two minutes ata ritual ng pagseserve eh,hagkgak d2 kembot dun,inisin lang kalaban,
gustu ko ung halo halo players,ang ingay nun,may bading may tibo may papa may gelay na papampam,hehehe
ritual ng pagseserve.. hahaha.. korek!
may nsg-si-sign of the cross, gagawa ng shapes sa paa, tapos maraming variations ang underhand serve… hahaha… nakakamiss ang intrams at paliga ng barangay…
kaya ka pala “puto ng puto” kala ko nagugutom ka lang at gustu mu ng puto?!?kornixz!!!hehehe
..pag si SEGODINE “kutsina” na,baka biko pa nga,hehehe
gaga! kapag kay SEGODINE…, malamang ay “putong tostado” na…(”,)!
korek! when i was in highschool, i used to play volleyball during our intramurals, and although i was not really good in it, i still enjoyed the experience…, kaya nga lang madalas na taga-serve lang ako, or kapag first years or second years lamang ang kalaban namin, medyo in talaga ako!eheheheh but during the championship round na, madalas ay nagchi-cheer nalang ako with my “sisters” para maasar namin ang mga kalaban!hahahahaha! pero enjoy talaga…(”,)!

oh yes!! sabat lang ah?! hehe.. i used to play also volleyball during my college years in our intramurals..hmpf,,though hindi talaga gnon kabonga ung mga palo ganyan2 but the experience was quite satisfying..hehehe,,
ah,,khit nga pla now,, i do still play volleyball as one of the players in our church..hehehe..and mind you,,i stand 4′9″ tall only..hahaha
tara let’s,weve learned all the basics,laro na tayo,magkanu ba per hour ng The Arena SAn Juan?!!hehehe

kawawa ang TEam natin pag napunta sa harap ang libero at setter,si AYA,di ko alam kung nakakalundag yun sa laki ng kanyang hinaharap,ang libero magrereceive lang ng magrereceive buong game,kelangan natin ng guest player,si MAMA LINGO na lang!!heheh, Go Go MAMA!! o kaya si

oo nga pala. mas bongga kapag meron tayong guest player…, and since na allowed na ang 2 guest players, i suggest na sina papa hanry james pecana (UST) and chris macasaet (DLSU) ang kunin natin para panalong-panalo ang team natin! hay naku mga friend, tiyak na kabog ang ibang teams syempz! secured tayo sa blocking department dahil nandyan ang best blocker ng UAAP na si papa chris, one thing more hanry james can also block at ang laks pa ng palo kaya sure na wagi talaga tayo! yeah, dapat pala si aya nalang ang libero natin, then utility si ousted, ikaw nalang ang open hitter, then ako nalang ang setter para naman ako ang laging nagse-set kina papa hanry and chris!nyahahaha! pero heto pa ang mas matindi…, salitan tayo as a setter and a spiker as well, para bang sina semana and abanto, pero syempz tayo ang “GIRLY” version nila! hay naku tiyak na kakarerin ko talaga kapag nasa front row kami nina papa hanry and chris! lastly, syempz stick parin tayo kay mama torres as our coach!bwahahahaha!
ayoko namang agawin kay MAMAtorres ang MVP,MOst VAklush Player,pero wagi talaga yun setter spiker!mawiwindang ang mga opponents na tin nun,pero ayokong maging tibo ah!!* gagayahin lang natin formation nila hindi mismong sila,hehehhe
gustu ko rin mag back-row hits tulad ng inaasam kong si Edjet idol kong si Charo at aqcaintance kong si Xave,hehehe,bigyan mo ko ng set ha..pasensha na,masarap talagang mangarap.hehehe
bale heto na ang pinaka-ASTIG, PAMBIHIRA at PANALONG-PANALONG line up natin mga girly…

ayoko sa mga coach,mas malandi pa sakin yan,pagiinitan lang tayo ng mga yan kc mas magaganda tayo sa kanila,baka magaaway langpalagi mga coach natin at parehong clang bading,hehehe
gawd!!! i miss jerome lingo. hehehe everytime naka score siya hindi siya nauubusan ng drama. may bunny walk, may pakaway-kaway, may pa “shy effect” hehehehe.
hay naku, tulog pa yata lahat ng pipz kaya mag-isa lang ako dito…nyahahaha! i’m really exhausted, rest na muna ako, bibiyahe pa ko mamaya. nytie guys and mownin’ as well…(”,)!
