UST spikers to skip Shakey’s League 5th season
MANILA, Philippines - Bad news to volleyball fans out there.
The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tigress Spikers, champions in the last two conferences of the Shakey’s V-League collegiate volleyball competitions, will no longer participate in this year’s 5th season of the tournament.
Acting head coach Cesael de los Santos, in lieu of the absence of long-time coach August Sta. Maria who suffered a stroke last Sunday night, said the team will no longer join the league that is set kick off hostilities this coming March 30 in order for the players to concentrate more on their studies.
He added that they would also use the long summer break to re-organize a team hampered because of the injuries of star-players Angeli Tabaquero, Venus Bernal and 70th UAAP spiker-of-the-year Mary Jean Balse.
De los Santos said their decision not to join the Shakey’s V-League has the blessing of UAAP President and UST Athletic Director Fr. Ermito de Sagon.
“Last week pa namin pinag-uusapan kung sasali pa ang team sa tournament. In the end, we decided that it’s best for the team not to join the tournament,” De Los Santos told GMANews.TV in a phone interview.
“Burned-out ang mga players that’s why we are not joining. Aside from that nagra-run conflict kasi ang tournament sa pag-aaral ng mga bata that’s why we made the decision (not to join),” he added.
De los Santos, who was once a member of the RP men’s volleyball team in the ‘90s, also said that they will also concentrate their site on the upcoming 71st season of the UAAP volleyball competitions in December in hopes of reclaiming the women’s title they lost last month.
“Gusto rin namin i-focus ang training namin sa UAAP. I think magagawa namin yun kung hindi muna kami sasali sa V-League,” he said.
UST won the 69th UAAP women’s volleyball crown last year, only to lose it this year when they were ambushed by eventual champions Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws in the Final Four late last month.
With UST’s absence, the league will be left with only seven teams, namely San Sebastian College, Ateneo de Manila University, Adamson University, De La Salle University, 2008 UAAP champs Far Eastern University, Lyceum of the Philippines and debuting College of Saint Benilde.
Champion teams from the south - University of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu and University of St. La Salle of Bacolod - will also make their debut in the biggest stage of the sport where top squads from UAAP and NCAA strut their wares.
Tonyboy Liao, commissioner of the tournament, said they decided to invite teams from Visayas since “volleyball is very popular there.”
Liao said the two teams, regular fixtures in the UniGames in Bacolod where UAAP and NCAA teams also play, would play only in the quarterfinals.
“The team won’t play in the elimination due to logistical constraints,” he said.
The Shakey’s V-League’s opening ceremony will start at 1 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan.
There will be a single round robin in the elimination for the eight teams, where the top two teams automatically clinch the semifinal slots while the last two eliminated. The remaining four will meet the Visayan teams in the one-round quarterfinals where the top two qualify in the semis.
The top two teams in the classification phase and the top two teams of the quarterfinals will play another single round for the placing in the final.
Teams landing in third and fourth place will play a best-of-three for the bronze medal while the first and second ranked team will play for the best-of-three series for the gold medal. - GMANews.TV

At least there are 3 new teams…Not really a big lost considering the their 3 best players are injured. It’s really not interesting to watch UST without their three big guns. Better for them to back out than for us to watch a mediocre team.

oo na malakas ang ust pero talo pa rin cla. Ganyan talaga ang buhay kung TALO TALO! Kung BASHER! BITTER! Not to mention LOSER! nyahaha

UST still has a large following after vleague considering na nag-iba yung line-up nila upon entering UAAP season.
last vleague they have roces. Before, they have Maizo,gutierez, and mabbayad in UAAP.
They still have the charisma which is hard to explain.
Ang importante sumikat na yung sport sa mga students. Sana magtuloytuloy pa rin. Tumulong lang naman ang UST sa pagsikat ng sport. Hindi lang naman sila ang nagbenefit kundi yung buong volleyball community. Kung ayaw niyo sa UST eh di wag. Basta ang importante sumikat na yung sport at magtutuloy-tuloy naman na siguro yan. Just continue in supporting the sport.
Sa mahilig makipagtalo sa mga babae, magvolleyball na lang. Hindi yan contact sport. Baka maging teammate mo pa yung mga crush mong players. Balibliktarin mo man ang mundo ang mga walang hilig sa volleyball, UST talaga ang pinanonood. At mahirap maexplain ang appeal at aura nila.
You can’t change their reverence for UST.

Kahit hindi ka naglalaro ng volleyball eh tunay na volleyball fan ka pa rin. Halata sa post mo. Ang mga sinasabi ko ay yung mga walang kahilig hilig talaga sa volleyball tulad ng mga tondo fans noon noong napadpad yung games sa may rizal mmc. At ang mga nag-iinuman na na napag-uusapan at gustong gusto ay UST. Meron pa palang isa si Rachelle Anne. Yun madalas din pag-usapan yun.
Pero optimistic ako na magtutuloy tuloy na tong popularity ng sport. Kasi para sa atin to. Bahala kayong mag-away away pero sana magtuloytuloy to. Natural lang yan parang PBA fans. Positive yan. May mga ganyang klaseng fans.
Para sa atin ang pagsikat ng sport, sa mga young girls na may potential ito, na magiging pag-asa natin sa future sa volleyball.

seriously, since i’m an avid fan of the lady tigresses, i was really sad upon hearing the news. we all know that UST is one of the strongest team to beat in the league, because if not, they wouldn’t bag the two consecutive championship title during the last conference. it’s also very demoralizing and frustrating on their part because of the fact that they have a crown/title to defend, yet due to the circumstances happened for the past few days, well i must say that it’s really a wise and appropriate decision for them not to join this conference. they really need time to make a crucial adjustments for them to have a solid comeback anyway. though i really feel bad knowing that my favorite team will no longer be in the scene of the said league. i might wait for the next season of the UAAP then, and for now, i’ll just settle myself to what available entertainment is offered…(”,)!

It is a loss for the forthcoming Shakey’s V-league season V for UST not to participate, but it is for the best of the team to take a rest for this season to rebuild the team and regain the confidence they had lost. The team will be making a big adjustment when their top two scorers will not with them anymore and the lost of Coach august to a medical ailment. They will have to train hard to be competitive again with the other teams.
I think, it is a best decision to prioritize the studies of the players and prepare for the upcoming UAAP. These are the priorities of the players, to finish school and bring titles for their school. The fans will miss them in V-league, but they will come back with a vengance.
With the changes happening in the UST team and coaching staff, I’m sure it will be a different Team that we will see in the coming games.

yes tama ka…there is no chance that we’ll see good game coming from UST this v league…they’re demoralized and they need major adjustments. Definitely they will not retain the crown so it’s better to not join at all. It’s also another way of saving their face from defeat. Overall it’s really for their best to miss this coming season.
Siguro pinaninidigan lang nila na hindi basta basta ang sports program nila. Hindi sila basta basta sumasali sa mga bagay na alam nila na hindi sila mananalo. Lagi ka ngang sumasali pero ni isang beses hindi makapasok sa finals. And maybe, chance na rin ng ibang school na makakuha ng crown sa VLeague. 5 seasons na ang VLeague pero Lasalle at UST pa lang ang nananalo. Hindi ako magugulat kung pati ang Lasalle eh hindi sasali sa Season 5.
And naniniwala ako na Lasalle at UST pa rin ang may pinakamaraming fans sa liga. Natulog lang ng bahagya ang mga fans ng Lasalle dahil nawala ang mga key players.

Yes they should prioritize their studies pra maka-graduate naman sila. Balse and Bernal has outlived their eligibility in the UAAP so there’s really no reason for them to stay. therefore that’s the best choice they have to graduate from skul.
by the way, ano ba course ni bernal and balse? hehe. alam niyo po ba?
What a shocking news! Although i am not from USTE (up po ako),i am always rooting for the tigresses simply because i enjoyed a lot watching them play. The team has the IT to attract a large, varying crowd just like PBA’s ginebra team. Perhaps this predicament is a blessing in diguise for me because i won’t be able to see the finals in june (LA bound for a vacation)although i can have the game tape. I saw the finals between san sebastian and ust last december live at the arena and had it taped too. Is your decision final guys?

yeah, they did a great job last conference, imagine they were able to defeat ateneo during their do-or-die game and eventually got the slot for the final games! and during the finals, they lost the first game against san sebastian, yet they managed to regain composure and proved their determination to defend their crown, and they succeeded because they defeated san sebastian during the second and third games respectively…, such an exciting and excruciating volleyball actions showcased by these two teams during the recently concluded conference of the league…(”,)!

i agree…, afterall, denise patricia tan wouldn’t be the best setter of the UAAP Season 69 if she didn’t performed her task very well…, and just like what you said, UST wouldn’t also won the championship title during last conferences of the v-league, plus the UAAP season 69 if she failed to supply such impressive and favorable sets! come to think of it, a certain spiker wouldn’t execute such powerful spikes/hits if there’s no great/good sets being provided…(”,)!

Those where the days kung saan di maganda ang laro ng players. We can’t blame Denise kung di nya talaga maibigay ng maganda ang mga bola sa mga players. Marami naman yang dahilan, di ba? And I observed na competitive na ang mga ibang teams ngayon. Nag pepeak na sila this season and unfortunaately, natalo nga nila ang UST. Di naman lahat ng panahon nasa itaas ka. Kailangan mo ring maranasang madapa ng minsan para malaman kung saan ka nagkulang. Lesson ito sa UST sa iba ring mga teams. Nagkataon lang na mas maganda ang laro ni Semana kesa ki Denise. Pero last playing year na ni Wendy ang Season 70. Kaya adjust na naman next season sa mga bagong players. Sabi nga nila, pana-panahon lang yan.. Minsan panalo, minsan talo. Ang importante, nilaro mo ang game at your best.
Sabi nga nila eh, UST has an epic campaign in winning a title. Were heroines are made. Kaya pala very colorful sundan ang campaign nila.
Sayang hindi ko naexperience masundan yun. Noong huling Vleague lang.
Not dominating the entire season but passing through the arduous chalenges during crucial games when they are on the brink of elimination.
Parang scripted yung campaign nila. Very dramatic yung pinagdaanan.
Yung mga past campaign daw nila puro ganiyan. Pati season 69 hindi raw sila ang top. Nagkaroon pa raw sila ng mga crucial games na they have to win. They are experienced in overcoming adversities daw when their back’s against the wall from their past campaigns.
Yun nga lang this time they failed na.

it’s very sad indeed to know that the UST Tigresses won’t be able to join in the coming Shakey’s V-League…they are among the best in this league…without them, the other teams (or the fans) won’t have anyone to bash on…whatever anyone would say against the UST Team, it’s still wouldn’t be the same league without them…GO UST! I am a Thomasian and I’m really looking forward in seeing UST compete in the shakey’s V-league. I hope that they will change their mind and decide to join the league anyways. I really want to see them defend their title since we lost our title in the UAAP. Also this can be the opportunity to redeem themselves and prove that they are the best women’s volleyball team in town. They bring a lot of intensity to the game and they heighten the competition in women’s volleyball so I really hope that they would join.

Pero sabi ng mga experts UST has the most talented individuals. Kung paghihiwalayin mo sila they will shine on other teams.
Other opinion says that even their back-up setter has the potentials of exceeding Semana. Napakaraw pa nga lang. Pero outstanding na raw yung raw talent na yun. Highly recruited daw sa highschool volleyball yun. Blue chip rookie daw yun pero back-up setter lang ng UST.
Kung kikiwestyunin mo kung bakit hindi sila nagchampion kung most talented nga sila individually.
It happens. Just like in basketball. USA has the most talented players individually. But they are losing and finding it hard to dominate the game.

I mean for this season kasi ayan oh basahin nyo.
its not being so bitter but sad…maybe the unreported reason why the team is not playing in the coming V-League is also because of Coach Sta.Maria’s health condition…you know a team is not complete without its coach…kahit na sabihin mong may alternate coach or trainer ang UST team eh without the head coach the team wouldn’t function to the max…its also the coach who brings out the mediocre players into top guns…my opinion only…USTe pa rin! I’m from Iloilo and a fan of UST WVT. Nabasa ko ang mga posts dito at nalaman ko na marami ang magkasalungat ang mga opinyon. Let us make things clear here. Sa mga marunong maglaro ng volleyball, ang perception nila towards sa paglaro nito ay iba kesa sa mga fans lang. We can’t avoid na mainis, magalit sa mga tao dito na nagpopost lang pero di naman pinag-iisipan ang mga sinasabi. Kung galit kayo kasi pinagtatanggol ng mga fans ng UST ang team, okay lang. Pero yung laitin kung panu maglaro ang mga players, e di na yata tama. Ang kada players eh may iba’t ibang paraan maglaro. Kaya nga team game ang volleyball kasi they’re trying to find the right mix of players na maglalaro sa court. Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses. So sa mga critics ng UST, patunayan nyo na tama kayo. Patunayang niyo na buhay ang crowd ng V-league kahit walang UST. Then will I salute you…

Pasensiya na kasi wala akong prowebang maipapakita sa inyo. Ako po ay hamak lamang na fan na napapanood ang larong volleyball. Ako man po ay isang manlalaro din ng volleyball at masakit din sa kin na punahin ang isang manlalaro kung hindi sya nakakalaro ng maganda. Pero sabi ko nga, opinyon nyo po iyan. A single fan or 2 will never determine the success of the V-league… Sabi ko nga it’s really hard for fans of UST that hindi cla kasali… But for us fanatics of volleyball pkialam ba namin UST lng naman ang nawala.
cguro ang point nya ay hindi lang dun sa 2 fans na yun, example lang yun e. alam naman natin na UST ang may pinakamaraming fans, so without them it would definitely hurt the league.
pero nde pa naman natin nakikita talaga kung gaano kadami yung fans ng ibang teams e. fans ng SSC madami rin. yung fans ng FEU at ADU madami rin nung sa UAAP. nagkataon lang na yung ibang teams eh nde pa naman masyadong umaangat sa rankings kaya nde pa ginaganahan yung fans nila na pumunta. kung iisipin nyo nga ADU parang onti ng fans, pero nung UAAP finals madami pala. aside from that, i don’t think titigil na sa panonood ang UST fans. mahahati rin yan sa iba’t ibang teams this season. I, personally, would still support the league. my bets are DLSU, FEU and SSC, mga rivals ng USTE. haha!

Saka sana may team din na katulad ng demeanor ng UST in playing the game. Very animated, bubbly, tipong ‘girls having fun’. Para ngang mas livelier sila noong huling Vleague kesa sa pagpasok nila sa UAAP. Yung tipong it makes you glued to the game.
Ang nakita ko lang na may ganyang klaseng personalities sa mga player in playing the game, eh yung UP. Darlings of the crowd yung demeanor nila. Yun nga lang less athletic sila.

My take on UST’s absence: uhm, ok. Hahaha. Nonetheless, andyan pa naman ang equally exciting SSC and Ateneo teams and of course the UAAP champs FEU and the new teams from the Visayas.
My take on UST’s reason for not joining (concentrate on studies): I have reservations on this. Shouldn’t the players be concentrating on their studies naman talaga right from the start, and that being an athlete should only be their second priority? Why only now? Ewan ko lang ha. Personally, I think natatakot ang UST na di madefend ang crown sa Vleague so might as well not join. Tingin ko lang ha.
Anyway, UST’s loss is another team’s game. Tuloy ang Vleague! Excited nako kung sino mga imports. And yes, the Visayan teams!

Unless of course UST is simply too dependent on its key players. I mean kung ako yung new players ng UST ngayon pa lang gusto ko na kalabanin ang mga veteran teams na posible ko ding makaharap sa next UAAP season. Vleague na din ang venue para makilatis na talaga kung sino sa mga new players ang may “K” na pumalit kina Bernal at Balse.

i think what UST just did is really unsportmanlike,kasi other teams join this conference because they love the game of volleyball even if they knew they have a very slim chance of getting it to the finals,look at NU-uaap- and Lyceum,they still join for the sake of the sport even if their ego has been trashed many times because of their losts,then,many players were just very excited of playing in this conference because for them it’s an honor to play against UST having several RP team players,makalaro lang sila,malaking bagay na yun,and just because UST’s pride has been stepped on this last UAAp and they fear they cant win this one they decided to just back-out,a really coward and disheartening move..cant just they play their best just for the fun of it and let fate unfold it’s due course,anu namn kung matalo kayo,at least lumaban kayo,nagimprove at nagkaexperience kayu at di kayo naduwag,nakakahiya sa volleyball community lalo pa’t promoting volleyball ang theme natin ngayun,tapos nagiinartz kau.

Mga speculations lang naman ang mga pinang-iisip natin kung bakit talaga nagback out ang UST sa V-league. Come to think of it, champion sila last conference at parang kakahiya naman kung di sila maglaro ngayon to defend it. Pero may mga reasons naman silang inilahad sa publiko kung bakit nga di sila sasali. Sa atin na lang yun kung papaniwalaan natin sila o indi. At ang saklap naman na palaruin nyo ang UST na may mga injured players para lang i prove nila na champion team sila. Di naman yata tama yun. At iba ang UAAP sa V-league. At sa rematch game thing nila with FEU, eto na nga sana ang venue para bumawi sila pero maraming circumstances na we can’t avoid tulad nga ng mga injuries ng mga players nila. Di naman siguro takot ang UST sa mga ibang teams sa V-league. Yun lang siguro talaga ang nangyari. At bitter ang mga fans ng UST kasi di sila sasali sa V-league, di sa natalo sila sa UAAP.

Yes, accept UST’s decision it is, whatever that may be. Let’s just all hope and pray that they made the right decision. I’m sure pinag isipan naman nila yan and the possible repercussions of such decision.
What is important is that there’s an upcoming Vleague which signals the entry of the summer season. Kaya happiness na naman ako. Hahaha. If one is truly a fan of volleyball (like I am), I will continue supporting the sport no matter who plays. Players (or teams for that matter) may come and go but this should not deter the fans from supporting the sport itself. After all, this is just the means to an end. Our end goal is to eventually improve the sport in the country and start kicking Thai ass*es come Seagames. hehehe

hello po bago lang po ako dito, Fan po ako ng UST Lady Tigers and a Thomasian as well, hindi naman po siguro takot ang UST na mag-defend ng crown this year may mga bagay lang po talaga na kailangan ayusin at i-consider, kung tatanungin po natin ang mga players ng UST 100% sure ako na gusto po nila ma-defend ang crown nila sa V-league. Let’s give it to them; they just lost the crown in UAAP season 70, which they happen to be the host school, and they lost a lot of key players in their rooster. They are also facing the possibility that a new coach will take over in their succeeding campaigns. These are things that they considered before they decided to skip the V-league. Maybe a lot of excuses were made before, but one thing for sure, the players are burned-out and needs time to rest. Being on top of the sport is not an easy thing to accomplish (not to mention maintain it). UST will always be as competitive team as before because of it’s program. Although, you can’t be always on top, you should come down to strive again to be on top. The time-off UST team made, by skipping the V-league, will rest their players and start to train hard again for the upcoming UAAP or V-league games. It is like a wear-and-tear theory. They have to be reborn to let them shine their greatness again.
For the UST supporters out there, you might see a different team once the UAAP volleyball season starts again. I had talked to coach august before he became ill, he had some new players we haven’t seen yet. As we all know coach august, he always find good players from all over the country. With his assistant coaches taking in-charge, the team will be having good training and plays. These assistant coaches are not so-so, they used to play in UAAP years before. Asst coach delos Santos even used to play with FEU and RP team. Maybe, we will see a UST team blended with the FEU system of volleyball.
To all those people posting here; please be objective in the way you post your messages without sorting to bashing the team or the players….. It is easy to say what we want, but it is hard to swallow it when we are wrong…….
I have an idea for those who always post here, why not we make a league here and play the game of volleyball to see who really plays and understand the game?

i was rily sad nung nalaman ko ung balitang d makksali ang UST sa v-league dis season.iba kc ung fun & excitement na naibbgay nla sa fans wen dey play,and ung bonding nila inside the court is rily extraordinary..mahirap iexplain kung bakit superb tlga ang paghanga ko sa knila,all i know is im happy when i see them play.although ngaun,mejo on the rocks cla..pero for sure they’ll come back to regain what the’ve lost,nd hopefully ung ngyari sknila will serve as a learning experience 4 them.

ohh..,, tlaga lng huh.. kac ang pag ka2 alam q lng cla pah ang defending champs.. and soo kung mag le2ave mung cla sa Vleague is that a big deal?? ehh kung gusto nla?? lhat nman nang tao is free to have a rest kung ikaw di ka nag pa2hinga baka di ka tao.. and sabihin na nating infavor aq sa UST kac there no.1 fan ehh ikaw cnog pinag ma2yabang moh?? cla morada?? c cafranca?? o daquis?? kac ang USt lumalaban nang fare.. at hindi payabangan.. kac ang game is a game and hindi payabangan kung yang tatlo ring yan ang pinag ya3bang moh.. then ngaun q lng nalaman na pare2ho pla ang mga tiga FEU puro maya2bang.. 1. they are playing Fare..
prove: kapag naka spike hindi cla naki2pag talo sa referee kung touch or not ang FEU laging kailangan may touch.. even though kitang kita nman na lobo ang spike…
2. they have the ability that the “FANS” really want..
prove: they are pretty, they are good players and higit sa lahat hindi nmin cla naki2ta na nag ya2bang inside and outside the court…
3. they are the players that we can call “SPORT”
prove: nung tinamaan ni morada c tabaquero sa face, halata nman dba na masayang masaya sya right?? how did i know?? then bakit sya tumatalon pa kung di sya masaya?? bket magaling na sya non?? pero nakita ba nten c tabaquero na nag yabang den?? if anyone seen na nag yabang sya edi sna wla nang may gusto sa kanya dbah?? and my last prove: nung tagilid na ang UST sa last game?? in every point ba nakita nyo ang UST na nag yabang nang shirts nla?? see???
dahil sa mga katangian na yan kaya maraming supporters ang UST.. and nung interview na ni daquis.. does she call that as a deserving?? sna bago manlang sya nag sabeh nang gnun.. dpat sna muna nyang tanungin ang mga team mates nya… and higit sa lahat bakit tinatawag nla ang FEU as plastics?? kaya q ring i prove yan.. how?? nung nandon pa sa gym.. actually nandon aq… and i see through my eyes na sobrang saya nla na nakuha na nla ang corona.. i know na maganda tlaga un.. and i conggratulate them na nsa knila na ang corona.. pero bakit nla kailangan pang tawagin ang UST as loosers?? and higit sa lahat “BOBO” bakit does FEU players are perfect?? and does every one is smart kung naging champs nah??.. yun yung hnde matanggap nang mga UST supporters.. na bakit nla kailangang craan pa ang UST and kailangang lait laitin pa ang UST kung hnde cla sa2li in this comming V-league.. and sna mag yabang cla this comming UAAP cause i think bka cla nman ang ibasura nang UST ulit.. and i really wish them good luck this Vleague season.. kac baka hndi nyo makuha ang corona..

galit lang yan CHRIS… you dont really know them… FEU players and UST players are friends and so as the other players… i dont think magkalaban sila sa labas… ang trashtalk ay tactic lalo na pag sa finals to weaken the morale of your opponent, its up to you, sa gusto mo man o hindi ginagamit talaga yan… sa nakaraang uaap i dont think may nagmayabang, even segodine ay di ko nakakitaan ng pagmamayabang, siguro happy lang ang mga players… wag ka sanang masaktan but your reasons are pointless…. peace….
ahem…there’s no point in fighting and most of all saying ill things about both schools. why fight over them, all along the players from both squads are friends. that makes it so funny that fans argue while the players do not.
