V-League fever spreading rapidly
The upcoming Shakey’s V-League is probably the most talked-about conference in the entirety of the league. V-League Season 5 is said to open on March 30, 2008. Venue will be at The Arena, San Juan. Opening games will be between the defending champs University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University. These two teams seem to have the most number of fans and followers.
(NOTE: The following info are mostly just assumptions and/or rumors from very reliable sources. This is NOT the final list of guest players.)
Invitations, Assumptions, and Rumors:
- University of Santo Tomas. They will most likely get Suzanne Roces and Rubie de Leon. UST is in dire need of a middle blocker since in the open area, they already have Venus Bernal and Angelli Tabaquero who are both able attackers and hard hitters. Suzanne Roces has proven herself as a good middle blocker for the Tigresses. She has been averaging more than 15 points per game last conference and has been very good with quick and running attacks. Veteran setting will be something they need right now in the person of Rubie de Leon since Rhea Dimaculangan only has the touch in middle area while open area for Denise Tan, unlike Rubie who possess both.
- Lyceum of the Philippines. Their key to winning in the 1st conference last season is their setter. Christina Salak will probably play again for the Lady Pirates together with former guest player Concepcion Legaspi. The link of this team will be still somewhat solid having one of the most sensational players in Sherrillyn Carrillo, Beverly Boto and Jane Jarin. Together with these, three, and with their excellent floor defense, the Muralla-based spikers are highly expected to make it to the Semis.
- Adamson. The Falcons have been inviting former guest player Nerissa Bautista and Dahlia Cruz as guest players. It is but fitting to actually get these two. No offense to Jill Gustillo and Jacqueline So, but Nerissa Bautista and Angela Benting will make a good opposition in the open area while the smartness of Rissa Jane Laguilles plus the power of Dahlia Cruz combined will be something to watch out for. Of course, how could I forget? Their relentless floor defense will be a key to winning of course.
- De La Salle Taft or St. Benilde? The Taft-based La Salle Lady Archers are still unsure if they will join this season. La Salle’s appealing to the board of members of the league to allow veterans Manilla Santos and Charleen Cruz to play in the V-League as regular players and not as Guest Players since they are still students of La Salle and will still play for next year’s UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament. They also stated that the girls just took a leave of absence from the team to focus on their studies that’s why they think that the two girls should still be allowed to play. But, if ever they will really join, they are rumored to get veteran setter Relea Ferina Saet and possibly a Thai or local Open Spiker. If they won’t join by the way, sister school St. Benilde will be the one who will play in the coming V-League.
- Far Eastern University. The UAAP Season 70 Women’s Volleyball champs possess a strong line-up with strong collegiate players and two guest players who have very high credentials. The first one is Michelle Carolino who is a veteran in the Open Area. Michelle Carolino has been a V-League MVP already and played as guest player for La Salle and alma mater Letran. Rumored to join forces with the Lady Tams is Thai import Sanorseang Areerat, who incidentally played also for La Salle last season. Sanorseang Areerat was awarded Best Blocker way back in her collegiate days in Thailand. It is quite practical to choose an Open and Middle since FEU is in dire need of a tall and middle hitter, not to take anything away from Josephine Cafranca and Mecaila Irish May Morada who by the way did very well in the UAAP Championship Series. Michelle Carolino will be a good replacement for rookie Shaira Gonzalez. Shaira Gonzalez is good but Michelle Carolino has proven herself in this area and can kill balls anytime she wants. FEU will be one of the teams to beat this coming V-League who really poses a deep bench and good floor defense.
- San Sebastian College. San Sebastian’s bid will probably be the one of the two awaited bids this coming V-League. Two Thais namely Jindarat Kanchana and Suphap Phongthong are rumored guest players who will boost up the spirits of the Gold and Red squad. Jindarat Kanchana has played for La Salle and Ateneo in the past conferences. Suphap Phongthong meanwhile is a National Team player from Thailand and is one of the most feared middle blockers in their country. Laurence Anne Latigay and Jindarat Kanchana will be good combos in the Open Area for the Lady Stags. Same goes for Suphap Phongthong and Rysabelle Devanadera who can be at link with each other as Middle Blockers for the team. Jacqueline Mondejar should notbe her inconsistent self this time in the utility position, but more will be asked for her this time as she will carry on as team captain of the team. Same goes for Charisse Ancheta, who has a big responsibility for giving sets to these players.
- Ateneo de Manila. The most hyped team right now is of course none other than the Ateneo Lady Eagles. San Sebastian may have gotten Jindarat Kanchana and Suphap Phongthong as guest players, but the girls from Katipunan will not be left behind as they are rumored also to get two Thais. Two Thais which are familiar to all of us V-League loyalists. Lithawat Kesinee and Jaroensri Bualee is probably the fiercest duo of guest players this coming conference. Lithawat Kesinee is the Best Blocker and MVP in the 2nd conference last season while Jaroensri Bualee meanwhile is the Best Attacker and MVP in the 1st conference last season. Add tot that, the line-up will be spiced up by UAAP Best Scorer Maria Rosario Soriano and UAAP Rookie of the Year Maria Carmina Denise Acevedo. It is but possible also to have the tall but mean blocker Crystal Ballentyne as one of the players to watch out for Ateneo this coming V-League.
- More teams? There may be additional teams for the upcoming V-League as it gets bigger and better. Yup, you heard it right, the V-League might think about extending the league to 10 teams total. University of the Philippines is one of the teams rumored to join as well as founder Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

We were just talking about this at the chatbox last night! Can’t wait for the fifth conference shakey’s v-league! And is it true that the league will really go commercial this season? I hope so! More exposure foe the game and for our volleyball girls…
By the way… I saw a wikipedia entry about this. According to it, there would really be no la salle this time. Alarca and Mercado will play as guess players for Benilde. FEU really has a strong line-up! AND Denise Tan will not do the setting for UST (SAD)! Jeng will still play for SSC along with Ers Iratay, and Kesinee for Ateneo…

BUALEE AND KESINEE WILL PLAY FOR ADMU! SSC has a different set of imports.. Some Phongthong girl and Kanchana!!! I thought she willl play for UP?! and LaSalle is back in the line-up! They have Saet and Pimintel, while Benilde has Penetrante and Desiree Hernandez! But no Manila Santos, a Lopez girl will play libero and Diego will play for Benilde.

FEU and ADU? hmh! u’r just bitter UST didn’t win. trashtalking is not limited to the FEU-ADU games. it just so happened that they were the ones who fought in the championship and the players got carried away whenever they play. why do people always go for the underdogs?

my gosh, there are 10 teams who will be meeting this coming conference of the shakey’s v-league, ofcourse each team is equipped with such powerful and smart guest players which will greatly help for the strong defense and offense of every team! and as i review the line ups of each team, i observed that the ateneo squad is equipped with two thai players namely, lithawat kesinee(their former guest player during the last conference), and the big revelation is none other than Jaroensri Bualee (the former guest player of the SSC-R!) so these two thai imports are really expected to bring the glory to the ateneo lady eagles! it’s a good thing also to see the University of the Philippines and College of St. Benilde on the list of teams to be expected to this coming league’s conference…(”,)!

I wouldn’t say so. I can’t see Nootsara Tomkom, Onuma Sittirak, Hyapha Amporn, Wilavan Apinyapong, Pleumjit Thinkaow, Piyamas Koijapo in the team.
It’s still UST vs Ateneo. UST has De Leon and Roces while Ateneo has Bualee and Kesinee. Pretty much the same deal. After all, the other players of Ateneo are still Filipinos.

am happy that michelle carolino will be playing for FEU… i saw how she played in season 68 and how she and her team lasalle defeated UST with PIMENTEL, BERNAL, BALSE and Co YU KANG playing that time…FEU will be alot stronger now,,,
am happy that shakeys v league is about to happen but i dont like the idea of getting imports, again thailander, i dont think we needed to get imports because we have alot of powerful players here in the country left undiscovered and unused. having guest players are good, in this way we will be able to see and witness how our former players play their game but not imports, i honestly believe that we dont need them most especially at this moment in time because volleyball in the country is growing and now commercialized. I hope my FEU team will only get Filipino players…

No. The 2nd conference of the 5th Season will be a commercialized league. This having Thai imports in the league is somewhat a preview of the upcoming semi-professional league come October.

good thing din n may commmercialized league na ang women’s volleyball, that could inspire aour players to do well.. alam naman nating basketball lang kasi ang natututukan ng sponsors kaya sila lang ang may pera, let’s admit it, kailangan din ng pera ng vball players natin, at hindi yun naibibigay ng pangkaraniwang liga.. sana magtuloy tuloy n ang growth ng women’s volleyball.. at hopefully, kasunod na nun ang improvement ng men’s division.

magandang may THAI..kasi nagiimprove ang caliber ng Collegiate volleyball because of them,kita namn ang improvement ng Adamson,at ang mga spikes,may pwersa na,unlike dati,parang puro pass the ball ang laro,saka kung di tayo makikipagalliance sa ibang countries di magiimprove ang skills natin,our country is an archipelago we dont have the advantage of playing games with our neighboring countries unlike in EUrope and Amerika,they have the privelege of having Practice matches with their Neighboring Countries kaya magagaling sila.

If we will continue to adopt the local scene, I’m afraid the Philippines has nowhere to go but even down. It will be no more than a cycle in which talents and skills evolve around in our country. Unlike if we adopt the international scene, we can get skills and techniques to further improve the volleyball in our country.
We are not Russia, China or any other volleyball prowess country who doesn’t need to adopt an international volleyball program to succeed.
If you would notice last conference, Phee Nok Kesinee acted as a leader and was giving tips to Bea Pascual with regards to blocking and quick hitting. Guess what? Bea Pascual knew how to spike hard and has very much improved on that area.

Hmm, good observation. Not only does Charo Soriano improved on her backline attacking skills, more importantly she became a leader inside the court just like Kesinee. There’s really nothing wrong learning from others right?
(I wonder how the UST loyalists would react now to having more foreign/Thai “imports” for the V-League. Now that UST failed to continue their domination in the UAAP scene which did not involve any Tha imports.)

YES! Deserving ang UST men’s but they don’t deserve the respect of people who watched the game last sunday. A lot of people saw kung gano sila kayabang. Have you noticed people na nagboboo sa kanila. They won the championship kaso mas ok sana kung nagpaka humble na lang sila. I don’t see the reason bakit si Roque ang MVP sa finals…????????

hey, had you seen the attitudes of some of the FEU tamaraws yesterday…? and to answer your question, (why roque got the MVP award…,) probably because he really contributed a lot during the first and second game of the final match, although he didn’t play and score well during the third game, but still the committee chose him as the recipient of the said award. i was also surprised when his name was announced as the MVP awardee because i was anticipating that it would be torres or pecana perhaps who’ll get the said award…(”,)!

University of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu and University of St. La Salle Bacolod will join six other teams seeing action in the 1st conference of the premiere women’s volleyball tournament in the country today that starts on March 30 at The Arena in San Juan.
The move to bring in the two college teams from the Visayas is in line with the mission to promote and develop the sport of volleyball as perceived by the organizing Sports Vision and Shakey’s when they first conceived the project five years ago.
“Why these two teams from Cebu and Bacolod? Simply because these are areas where volleyball in the country is very popular,†said Sports Vision chairman Moying Martelino when he led officials of the Shakey’s V-League appear in Tuesday’s PSA Forum at the Shakey’s U.N. Avenue branch.
Joining USCR and USLS in the tournament that runs until June 6 are defending champion University of Santo Tomas, reigning NCAA titlist San Sebastian College, UAAP counterpart Far Eastern U, Ateneo de Manila, Adamson U, De La Salle, Lyceum and College of St. Benilde, which takes the place of Letran College.
The two guest teams from the Visayas however, will only see action beginning the quarterfinal phase when it battles the top four remaining squads at the end of the preliminaries. The top two teams in the eliminations earn outright berths to the semifinals.
