February 27, 2008 (Wednesday). Darn it. This one I wasn’t able to watch even a glimpse of the game. I’m sure it was as exciting as the women’s match. Here are the game results based on the latest UAAP Volleyball Daily Bulletins:
Men’s Volleyball Finals Game 2:
- FEU defeated UST in 4 sets: 28-26, 17-25, 25-23, 25-17. Best Scorers were (#6) Edjet Mabbayad of FEU with a total of 27 won points and (#9) Reno Roque of UST with a total of 15 points. Game duration: 1hour 49mins.
It was indeed a good day for the FEU squads as both teams won their respective matches. After losing to their arch-rival during their first encounter, the FEU Tamaraws fought back as they conquered the Tigers in game 2. Reno Roque and Edjet Mabbayad were Best Scorers of the game once more. Here are the top 10 Best Scorers of the UAAP Finals round so far:
1. MABBAYAD Edjet of FEU - 23pts.
2. MABUTOL Jerry of FEU - 14pts.
3. ROQUE Reno of UST - 13pts.
4. ILANO Harby of UST - 12pts.
5. TORRES John Paul of UST - 11pts.

The series is tied at 1-1. There will be a third and final game this Sunday. At this point, either teams are deserving to win the championship title. If we look back at the Elimination rounds, no other team came close into defeating these two. FEU and UST have really dominated the UAAP Men’s Volleyball Season 70. I’m sure everybody is expecting a very tight battle.

to all volleyball fanatics out there, please try not to bash here, most especially saying something odious and obnoxious at someone, i dont think its right and its not fair judging our players right away, kung may nagtatrash talk man o may lumalabas sa bunganga nila that you didnt like keep it within you, i mean they are the ones who experienced pressures and maybe its one way of letting it out…come on, try to enjoy the remaining games for this season instead of bashng around….

no doubt why edjet mabbayad was awarded early on as this season’s MVP and Best Spiker, while jessie lopez on the other hand got the Best Setter award. it was indeed a great battle between UST and FEU, and once again, i had witnessed such powerful and awesome spikes and blocks showcased by these both teams! so we’ll surely expect more volleyball actions on sunday, both WVT and MVT since it’s their final game this season and just like what the commentators, coaches and players said, it’s the “heart” for the game really drives the players to bag the championship crown…, and i am crossing my fingers for the FEU Tamaraws!Goodluck guys(”,)!

i just simply witnessed the awarding ceremony yesterday, in san juan arena…, and in case you’re not aware, which i think you were, there is a separate MVP award aside from the “MVP award during the finals”. the committee gives a recognition for the player who played/scored well during the elimination rounds and if there is a play-off game, then they also include the scores. hope you’ll be enlightened after reading this…God bless you…(”,)!

I beg to differ.
Being the best scorer is only an aspect of being an MVP. Other than scoring, the player must also contribute in other departments such as receiving, blocking, etc.
Well, that is just my opinion considering that UAAP Rules are constantly changing.
i am still wondering until now why cara acevedo got the rookie of the year award, where in if you’ll going to compare her performances to shaira’s…, you would eventually agree to my appeal…LOLS! i was really surprised when the name of acevedo was announced as the recipient of the award, instead of the name of shaira which i and most of the audience in the arena really anticipated…(”,)!

Shaira Gonzalez is not qualified for the ROY award as per Jai Reyes rule… Ang naging competitor lang ni Cara sa ROY award are Crystal Ballentyne, also from ADMU and Rhea Dimaculangan of UST…

The Jai Reyes rule is a general rule in all UAAP Sport… On the other hand, what you call Jervy Cruz or Ken Bono rule is only applicable in Basketball

I checked Daily Bulletin # 14 and Kara Acevedo scored better than Shaira Gonzales. Kara is 9th Best scorer while Shaira is 12th. All the while i thought it was the other way around. I believe the awards were based on that Bulletin, which was the end of the eliminations.
Perhaps because Charo took the spotlight (not in a bad way) from everyone in ADMU that we were not able to appreciate the silent workers of the team. I think it was Mozzy who mentioned yesterday that she never thought Acevedo is still a rookie…
Anyways, it was a well-deserved award for Kara Acevedo!
But I still love Shaira…perhaps the humblest player on (and hopefully off as well) the court…

ON WHY CARA ACEVEDO WON THE ROY OVER SHAIRA GONZALEZ :
Shaira Gonzalez is not qualified to receive the Rookie of the Year (ROY) award because there is a standing rule that a rookie player must come straight from High School (this what most refer to as Jai Reyes rule) to be qualified for the award, meaning the player must be first year as a player and first year in academics, as well…If a player graduated from High School in school year 2006-2007, she must be in first year College in school year 2007-2008
The ranking for the ROY race went this way :
1.) Ma. Carmina Denise Acevedo (ADMU)
2.) Crystal Joy Birch Ballentyne (ADMU)
3.) Rhea Katrina Dimaculangan (UST)
Cara Acevedo, Crystal Ballentyne, and Rhea Dimaculangan all played for UAAP straight coming from high school. As for Shaira Gonzalez, she is bound to play for DLSU last year but after she failed the examination twice, she was not able to enroll in DLSU and she is now with FEU…With that situation, she is not playing straight from HS… She’s in the first year as a player, but already considered second year in academics because she graduated from high school in school year 2005-2006…
The same scenario happened in Men’s Division… DLSU’s Chris Macasaet could have been the hands-down ROY but due this rule, the award was given to Jayson Ramos of UST… Macasaet is already a sophomore college student but is playing his first year of eligibility because of DLSU’s suspension last season
ON THE MVP AWARD :
Best Scorer is different from the MVP award simply because both scoring (Attacks, Offensive Blocks, Serves) and non-scoring skills (Sets, Digs, Receives) are both being looked upon as basis in choosing the MVP… If you happened to hear the commentators say that Charo Soriano is the leading MVP contender, that was because she leads the scores, digs, and reception departments during the time that the two teams competing in the finals was not determined yet…Now that the finals is between ADU and FEU, Charo has no chance of bagging the Season MVP award… UAAP Volleyball has different rules from the other volleyball leagues…The rule states that the MVP must come from the Champion team…If you happened to knew who the awardees were eversince the league started, this is always evident

Awww, too bad Charo worked so hard this season which happens to be her last year sa UAAP na din (right?). In any case, she’s the “People’s MVP”.
So the MVP award will be selected based on the final overall stats considering both the scoring and non-scoring skills. Hmmm, so this means it will most likely be Rissa Jane Laguilles if Adamson wins because it’s apparent that she can do it all. As for Men’s, should FEU win, no doubt it will be Edjet “Halimaw kung pumalo” Mabbayad for sure. Agree?

All the facts you mentioned here are correct, because Shai Gonzales trained with DLSU for a year when she wasn’t able to pass the entrance exams for the first time. She was given a second chance, but she didn’t make it again. Coach Ramil was forced to let go her with a heavy heart, because he can’t do anything about it. DLSU was suspended for a year and doesn’t want to have controversies when they came back. It was DLSU lost, but FEU’s gain in this deal. My information came from Shai Gonzales mother when we had a small chat during game 1 of the finals when we were seated together.
To all the fans of Shai Gonzales, it is quite disappointing to hear that she didn’t qualify for the ROY, because of this rule in UAAP WV. We know she is a good and humble player. An MVP award is not far to think, since she has 4 more years to play. She will be the future of FEU in the years to come. I hope she strive more to improve her skills and stay humble as she is.

if ever FEU wins on sunday, there is a big possibility for wendyanne semana to be this season’s MVP because of all the lady tamaraws, she’s the most consistent and the ever-reliable player, although macaila morada and rachel ann daquis are also a candidate for the award…, but if worse comes to worst, (which i am hoping that it wouldn’t happen) AdU wins, then there is no doubt that the award will be given to rissa jane laguilles! anyway, if ever wendyanne hasn’t bagged the MVP title, maybe the “BEST ALL-AROUND-PLAYER” will do. and i’m pretty sure that a lot of volleyball fanatics would agree to my claim…(”,)!

thank you swordtiker (nakahanap narin ako ng kakampi hehehehe)… i also thought of that…its really unfair… DUMBGENIUS is really unfair, imagine FEU’s win is VOLLEYBALL’s loss and USTs loss is VOLLEYBALL’s gain,what is he thinking? for the record,UST won the title only last season 69 for women’s and season 66 for men’s, only two championship for both since 2001 while FEU has 7 already, 3 for women’s and 4 for men’s since 2001, FEU has the longest appearances in the finals for 15 consecutive seasons, try to look at UAAP history, baka mahiya ka sa mga sinasabi mo… FEU has already 48 championship all in all, 25 for womens and 23 for mens while UST has only 16, 9 for womens and 7 for mens, since 1978 until this very moment hindi nawawala sa top 4 ang feu for both department, pag nakita mo ang history ng uaap baka mahihiya ka pati sa sarili mo… actually mas marami pa ngang championship title ang up at ue sa ust…before you speak try to think over and over if you can justify what you are about to say or write ok???
Nga pala FEU is about to add that number this season with two from both department…

napansin ko lang… kaya din palang lumevel ng male volleyball players sa basketball counterparts nila… nakikita din natin yung masculinity ng players on the way they serve, set, jump, and spike.. misnan pati yung trash talking, parang lalaking lalaki talaga cla(kinikilig talaga ako), yan ang nakikita kong reason why the feu male players gain this huge following from the female, bi, gay, and even straight male sports fanatics.. even the gay players gain following bacause of their vibrance on court, just like the players fro up… this just shows na hindi lang pambabae ang volleyball… sana magkaroon n ng pro-league ang volleyball dito sa pinas..

some of these players really exude a different kind of authority, vibrance, wit and humor when they’re inside the court. honestly, i really enjoy watching volleyball instead of basketball because i don’t know much about the rules and terminologies used in basketball, unlike in volleyball, there are a varieties of shots to learn and so much power and mental allertness involved! for those basketball fanatics out there, please don’t get me wrong, i mean no offense with regards my post…thank you…(”,)!
