Yes, they are a tremendous team. Yes, they are the defending champs. Yes, they have the national team coach. Yes, they are armed with the most rabid volleyball fans in the country. And yes, they just lost in the final four, losing for the fourth time in as many games to their arch rival FEU, a team who just always has their number. But do not despair volleyball fans, this is only the beginning of something great. There are two sides to every coin and I will start with this one.
UST’s unexpected fall from championship contention is good for the sport of volleyball because of a number of reasons:
- We should expect UST fans to be stronger than ever after this. Support has gone to near-senseless proportions (no thanks to basher rooms) and you do not bet against a wounded tiger (pun intended) when the next season starts. Come V-League, the gold and black will be back with a vengeance.
- Like the mighty New England Patriots, losses are still newsworthy for great teams. Sounds of “UST lost” are louder than “FEU won” so the volleyball community and armchair analysts still have something to talk about. Casual fans know that UST lost, but the real volleyball fans have been won over by.
- Shaira Gonzalez. The rookie sensation had been consistently been thwarted by UST’s front line but shined when it mattered the most, garnering player of the game honors along with standout Rachel Anne Daquis. Meet the future.
- Parity. Either Adamson or FEU will be eventual champions, which supplants UST’s volleyball dominance by winning the past 3 major volleyball tournaments, namely the Shakey’s V-League in Dec 2007, the V-League again in July 2007, and the UAAP Season 69 in March 2007. With different teams winning, support from the different schools will grow tremendously as school pride and spirit will be major factors in spending.
- Rachel Daquis on center stage. Whether you agree or not, Daquis is the face of volleyball today. With all due respect to the other players who perform better than her, Daquis is the one getting corporate sponsorships, TV commercials, and all sorts of media attention. Isn’t that what we all want? An eventual pro league? It starts with these kinds of support, bottom line. Ask any corporate bigwig who has the power to fuel money into volleyball, and the answer will be Daquis.

i could not agree more..what happen to uste team is may also be a good thing coz come the v-league its gonna be a far more stronger uste team to beat..shaira is one of the up and coming sensation of the uaap volleyball so lets see if she exceeds our expectations or just meet them halfway..must admit that daquis is a big name to reckon with in the phil. sports today..getting a lot of sponsorships is also a good thing to the game itself not only for rachel coz this means a lot of advertisers and much bigger exposure of the game itself nationwide..a must see game on sunday between adu and feu, so lets see who will bag the much coveted crown..

i agree with the post… yun eh ilan lang siguro sa mga rason kung bakit, pero may mga masmalalim pang dahilan.. and i think UST know the reason why? shaira gonzales; ito yung klase ng player na gusto mong makita pang mag-evolve, dahil kahit rookie lang sya na masasabi she play like a senior…. in the game… si Chel D. naman yah tama ka sya nagbibigay ng color sa volleyball ngayon… i hope sana ABS-CBN ay magkaroon ng isang liga ng volleyball, like shakeys v-league… para naman makabawi pa USTe… ^_^

I do agree with the post why UST failed to retain their title. There is always a thought, “As you reached the top, there’s no other way is to go DOWN”. I think UST had gave a lot to the game, fans, and school. Failing to qualify for the finals in this season was really a disappointment because they were a power house team, but we have to give credit to FEU who played their best in all of their matches. FEU adjusted from last year’s lost in the finals. They are now determined to capture the championship this season. Some key players in FEU played very well like Shai Gonzalez, Rachel anne Daquis, Mikaela Irish Morada, and Wendy Semana, which UST didn’t expect at first. As VANROCKJESUS said, “shaira gonzales; ito yung klase ng player na gusto mong makita pang mag-evolve, dahil kahit rookie lang sya na masasabi she play like a senior…. in the game…” this is a revelation in the FEU. This girl was the missing link in FEU’s Plays, which she provided this season. UST will always be a strong team because they have a great volleyball program. They will always find players who will fill-up the key posts that will be vacated by Balse and Bernal. It will be a new team, but it will always be competitive. Coach August always find his way to recruit and get the best volleyball players nationwide.
It is a good thing that corporation, such as abs-cbn and shakey’s, are giving support to the sport by providing nationwide exposure and awareness. We aspire that the sport will live as it is now, not only for the beautiful players but the sport itself. I have my reservations about the overwhelming fame of the sport because of these beautiful players that attracted corporations to invest into. I wish this fame of volleyball will continue, even these beautiful players will not play anymore in UAAP or V-league, for love of the game.

I cant hardly wait on sundays match up…am truly happy that my team made it to the finals… i can still remember the time uaap womens volleyball started, it was actually adamson vs ust, i am on ADU side that time and will always be because i like them but my favorite and my only team is FEU, i really wanted ADU to win that time but unfortunately they loss on a 5 setter match, ever since i really dont like UST, i know they are very good, UST is a powerhouse but i just dont like to be on their side, maybe because i know that even they will lose they will still remain to be on top and maybe because i know that they have coveted consecutive titles in 2007 already. UST has showed their dominance in volleyball for quite sometime now and they have produced very talented players that are now members of the national team but this time they lost. just like that they lost, they are not perfect and no one can afford to be on top always whether you like it or not, you will be replaced again and again, no matter how good you are and no matter how you perform in the past, someone will try to replace you and enjoy that moment you once enjoying and thats what happened to UST. FEU was always been good for me, always in the top4 but i think its their time replace UST, i am not discounting the talent of ADU but i think FEU has the potential to win this season, i am happy though that the team i like and the team i love ,made it to the championship, will be happy if ADU will win but will be more than happy if FEU will get the title this time, i think they are the most deserving team to win. Last year they were in the same position, but unluckily UST won and am really hoping that they will really do their job at their best because ADU is a very good team now, maybe if hannah suarez is present on their team replacing jill gustilo,no doubt they will win the championship.

My prediction in today’s game, FEU in 4 sets.
Go lady tams!
[Reply]
mine is FEU in 5 sets… i hope that they were able to find solutions on why cant they beat adamson while beating the powerhouse ust in 4 straight games…i dont think that ADAMSON has the height advantage, although FEU has smaller players than ADMASON and has new players on the floor too than ADAMSON, maybe, just maybe, because they cant guard SEGODINE because shes a lefty and its so hard to guard a lefty player and that is proven… i hope they really have a soultion on that… nevertheless i know FEU will still win the 1st game…very hard though…eventhough FEU loses its 3 games against ADAMSON i am still pretty confident that FEU can still win against them than facing UST which they defeated always this season.

i think, adamson will be the champion this season. pero hindi ako ganun ka payag. tsk3.. it would be much better pag po FEU, hehe.

puro na lang kayo UST-FEU.. i think it’s ADAMSON’s time to shine!!

I also think that Adamson will be the eventual champions. Although parang ang shallow, since they did not beat all teams. Had FEU won yesterday’s match, they would be the only team to beat evry team in the UAAP, pero hindi ganun eh.
I’m also dreading Adamson’s campaign next year since wala na si Serafica. Isang malaking GOOD LUCK!

charo I think is very young really to be working after her season in uaap.I think she should enjoy at the penacle of the sports shes into, shes now very popular in womens volleyble in this era now, she should grab every opportunity at hand, she could earn more from indorsement and commercials, she can even help the Philippine Nat’l Team elevate on the top in womens volleyball asia. Working after graduation can wait, but being a volleyballplayer while you were still young was i think a experience and adventure for once in a lifetime and a rare opportunity for a person to achieve. So to Miss charo Soriano-we,your fans are looking forward to see you play in the future after your graduation, you make us happy and interested in watching volleyball live and even in our tv sets, we hope to see you soon in v-league conference next year or even in 2010, we enjoy watching you in the court and tv interviews you had for the past couple of months. Youre pretty, lovable, smart and nice person and we hope that you will stay that way either, more power to you and to ur volleyball career, May God blessed you always,we youre fans loves you very much gud luck charo soriano
