The Adamson Lady Falcons, before Seaosn 68, were one of the whipping girls of UAAP Women’s Volleyball Competition. They would always end up from 6th to 8th almost every year and would just play a spoiler’s role in the other crucial games.
However, Season 68 was a season of defining for their team as they reached the Finals for the first time in Adamson Women’s Volleyball History. They lost but it is quite reasonable as they faced the mighty De La Salle Lady Archers that time who has not only the tallest and powerful players in the league but also the best girls when it comes to floor defense. The Adamson Lady Falcons however were inexperienced then. They never experienced a Finals match since they were not in the Final Four the previous year. But, during the Playoffs with the FEU Lady Tamaraws for the number 2 seed and twice-to-beat advantage, they showed heart by beating them in grueling five sets. The Final Four Game saw the Adamson Lady Falcons in a dominating form as they grabbed the game easily and their first ever Finals seat.
The first six that time of Adamson were powerful in a way that they can match De La Salle’s quickness. They have Janet Serafica as setter, Pauline Mendoza and Jacqueline So as their Middle Blockers, Kristine Ann Dave and Hannah Suarez as Open Spikers and Rissa Jane Laguilles as their Utility. Attacking wise, they matched up with La Salle well especially with the help of all-around player Kristine Ann Dave who was the hotshot player for Adamson that time. But however, come Championship, the experience and blocking and excellent floor defense of De La Salle courtesy of then-RP Team Libero Sharmaine Miles Penano prevailed as they won the championship easily in straight sets in the first game and four sets in the second game to clinch their third straight title.
The next year was a year of rebuilding for the Adamson Lady Falcons. They lost top scorer Kristine Ann Dave and a good blocker Pauline Mendoza in their line-up. They were left with Jacqueline So, Rissa Jane Laguilles and Hannah Suarez as the main attackers of the team. There were two rookies tough not powerful before, but showed potential and power. These rookies are Angela Benting and Michaelle Segodine. In fact, this squad is one of the squads who brought out the best in the UST Tigresses. Though they were having a twice-to-beat disadvantage, they managed to beat the Tigresses in 4 sets to clinch the game 1 of the Final Four. The next game is history.
This year, the wonders of Miss Minerva Dulce Pante and the fruits of her labor is coming closer and closer. This Season 70, we saw how the Adamson Lady Falcons dominated the UAAP scene. They were undefeated for two months until losing to a non-bearing game against their contrapelo or the team they haven’t beaten so far in the UAAP Season 70 which is the UST Tigresses. But, in other games, you would see the passion and desire that these girls have. Against other Final Four teams FEU and Ateneo, they beat them in dominating fashion in the eliminations in three straight sets while against the hard-fighting La Salle, they had a hard time but were still able to capture those two games.
Just last Sunday, they battled the young but hard-fighting FEU Lady Tamaraws in a very long five set match that lasted almost two hours and a half. The FEU Lady Tamaraws got the first two sets. However, experience and might saved Adamson to grab the third, fourth and fifth set. They showed the capability, heart and desire to really win that championship that they will even fight a game even though they are two sets down. This impressed a lot of critics like me for showing to the people that FEU still has a long way to go and that this year is indeed their year.
The first six of Adamson this year is somewhat similar to their first six last year only, Hannah Suarez, who graduated last March was replaced by Jill Gustillo who was a benchwarmer back then. The rookies I mentioned above were no longer rookies anymore. They are sophomores. Not just sophomore but they are the two girls who are the top scorers for the team right now. Michaelle Segodine and Angela Benting are the two girls who fought their hearts out last Sunday. Michaelle Segodine was a revelation for having 21 markers, probably her season high in the UAAP Volleyball Tournament while teammate Angela Benting had 19 points. It’s amazing how Michaelle Segodine formed into a benchwarmer into a go-to-girl for the Adamson Lady Falcons. Aside from these two, there are a lot of supporting casts as they have the current Best Setter in the League in Janet Serafica and current Best Attacker in Jacqueline So. Likewise, Rissa Jane Laguilles is probably one of the best blockers in the league who can keep up with the likes of Danielle Castaneda of UP and Jacqueline Alarca of La Salle. Her quicks are a thing to watch out for. Rookie Libero Lizlee Ann Gata is doing an excellent job ranking a good #2 in the digging department.
Aside from skills, heart will always prevail in these girls. You can see their desire and hunger to win it.
Adamson University has been waiting so long to win a women’s volleyball championship crown. NU, UP, UE, Ateneo, La Salle, UST and FEU have all won it. Now, is it there time to win the championship in probably the most dramatic UAAP Women’s Volleyball season?

ADU is now harvesting the fruit of their labor by displaying heart and desire to win the championship of the UAAP WV. They gave FEU a hell of a game by demonstrating a good floor defense without respecting the hard hit spikers of Rachel anne Daquis, Irish Morada, Shaira Gonzales, Wendy Semana, and Abanto. They frustrated them with those digs and good coverage that gave them the win. Congratulations! You are a step ahead into the finals and hope to capture your first ever title. Anyway, win or lose, you already proved to your detractors that you deserve to be the number 1 team……
I would to commend your coach/mother Minerva Pante for a job well done molding these players where they are now. Even before, she taught her girls how to defend the floor with a principle of nothing to hit the floor…. That’s the backbone of a true volleyball team, to give a good defense and convert it into a transition offense. To coach, this is the moment you have been waiting for, a Championship title before you retire in coaching. Once again, I salute you! It’s your destiny to be in the finals.
To ADMU, please give us a good fighting game before you end this season. I hope you will finish the season with a bang, not in a disappointing one just like what you showed in the ADMU-FEU game. Playing without the desire to win or make it a close game is unfair to the spectators and volleyball aficionados who believes and commends your capabilities as a team. You came this far to prove that you also deserve the shinning moment in this season. Maybe half the team will be gone by the next season, but you will always be remembered the team with vast improvement in the game of volleyball.
To ADU, you are near to the championship and this is the second time you will be there. With the experience you gained and the game you are playing, you have all the right to be in the finals. Give us your best game to achieve your goal……

The finals will be ADU vs FEU. Both teams have their own strengths and weaknessess, but it boils down who has the HEART AND DESIRE to win the championship. Both teams are very talented and skilled in volleyball, but MENTAL TOUGHNESS will be the key factor who will be the new champion. I’m seeing the finals will be decided on the 3rd game, because both teams are playing good. The three wins of ADU over FEU will no longer hold water in the finals, because it will be a new ballgame and arena. The pressure will give the nerves and tightness come in game time.
My personal prediction will be FEU in 3 games, as long they will make some adjustments in offense as well defense.
Kindly, someone tell Rachel Daquis to play some good defense on the floor and variate her attacks, because she is becoming predictable and checked. She is not even being respected by ADU because they seldom put a block on her, instead play her on the floor by digs. LAKASAN AT IBAON NAMAN NIYA ANG MGA PALO, HUWAG PETCHAYAN. SAYANG MARAMI PA NAMAN UMAMAIDOL SA IYO.
It’s just my 2 cents advice. hehehe!!!!

i think Adamson and UST will win their respective games tomorrow.
Though everybody might think Adamson will easily defeat Ateneo tomorrow but I dont think that will be the case. The latter will for sure not give the final slot to the former in a silver platter. Adamson will be quite relaxed tomorrow while Ateneo will try to be mentally tough. It’s gonna be a sure-exciting-second-game.
Now down on the first game…
FEU, without a doubt, is playing with great heart despite of very young players. But let’s consider that FEU had been playing consecutively and exhaustion might take its toll. Remember, they played UST to take the chance of fighting Adamson. It didn’t help as well that they fought Adamson coz it was a gruelling five-setter. And from the looks of it, Morada might have gotten herself injured that game. More like she was hurt on the right side (her spikes during the first and second sets were really powerful). Morada needs to pace herself (a problem Boulee encounters a lot) without sacrificing the quality of the game. Daquis needs to be consistent and Abanto needs solid ground.
On the other hand, if we take what happened into a positive account, the previous games could very well be a gauge on their physical capabilities. They got to know more their weaknesses and strengths (this time with way too much pressure)against the top two caliber teams. Teams need to practice a lot and those games were a pure test of stamina and quickness - both physical and mental alertness.
As for UST, they have been well-rested but the pressure of being unable to beat FEU for the past three meetings will surely haunt them. Denise Tan should show the form that helped their team win both Season 69 and the latest Shakey’s V-league. Balse and Bernal have been permanent fixtures of power and strength for the team so reliance should also be shouldered by Tabaquero whom I have observed has been not at par with her usual A game. Then again, everybody says, you can never discount the heart of a champion.
I maybe wrong or I maybe right….but one thing is sure though…it’s gonna be a great game come Wednesday…
I am for Adamson but beyond that….

I cant hardly wait on sundays match up…am truly happy that my team made it to the finals… i can still remember the time uaap womens volleyball started, it was actually adamson vs ust, i am on ADU side that time and will always be because i like them but my favorite and my only team is FEU, i really wanted ADU to win that time but unfortunately they loss on a 5 setter match, ever since i really dont like UST, i know they are very good, UST is a powerhouse but i just dont like to be on their side, maybe because i know that even they will lose they will still remain to be on top and maybe because i know that they have coveted consecutive titles in 2007 already. UST has showed their dominance in volleyball for quite sometime now and they have produced very talented players that are now members of the national team but this time they lost. just like that they lost, they are not perfect and no one can afford to be on top always whether you like it or not, you will be replaced again and again, no matter how good you are and no matter how you perform in the past, someone will try to replace you and enjoy that moment you once enjoying and thats what happened to UST. FEU was always been good for me, always in the top4 but i think its their time replace UST, i am not discounting the talent of ADU but i think FEU has the potential to win this season, i am happy though that the team i like and the team i love ,made it to the championship, will be happy if ADU will win but will be more than happy if FEU will get the title this time, i think they are the most deserving team to win. Last year they were in the same position, but unluckily UST won and am really hoping that they will really do their job at their best because ADU is a very good team now, maybe if hannah suarez is present on their team replacing jill gustilo,no doubt they will win the championship.
