January 16, 2008 (Wednesday). It was another exciting day for UAAP Women’s Volleyball. As usual, I arrived late for the FEU vs. UST match at the Blue Eagle gym. It was already the second set. So I asked “Manong referee†who won the first set. To my surprise, he said it was FEU! Before we move on in detail, here are the scores of the 8am and 10am games:
Adamson defeated UE in 4 sets: 25-12, 25-20, 23-25, 25-12
Best Scorers of the game was Angela Benting of Adamson with a total of 19 won points and April Ann Soriano of University of the East with 11 points. The game lasted 1hour and 27mins. Adamson climbs to the No.1 spot with a record of 6-1 while UE is still winless at 0-7.
De La Salle defeated NU in 3 sets: 25-18, 25-21, 25-18
Best Scorers were Jacqueline Alarca (as usual) of De La Salle University with a total of 13 won points and Jennifer Anne Cardoniga of National University with 18 points. The game lasted 1hour and 13mins. De La Salle is currently at the No. 5 spot with a record of 3-4 while NU goes remains at No. 6 with a 2-5 record.
Daquis and the Lady Tams conquer UST in 4 sets
So FEU took the first set at 25-18. It was now the start of the second set. Most of the time, it was the Lady Tigers doing the catching up. The Lady Tamaraws would always seem to find ways to deliver thanks to their excellent defense all throughout the game. At the 16-20 mark, FEU was determined to take advantage of the momentum. UST did not give up too easily and was able to reach 22 points. But their opponent was now at set point, 24. The Tigers had to call a timeout. All of a sudden, UST bounced right back. It was now 24 all after Venus Bernal converted another point via a drop shot. Then Rachel Anne Daquis answered right back with a powerful spike that got deflected off the blockers. She would then make another down-the-line spike. The score eventually reached 25-26 with FEU getting the upper hand. Then the Lady Tams capitalized and won the second set at 25-27. I think it was (#9) Morada of FEU who provided the winning spike.
UST started the third set with Rhea Dimaculangan as their setter. At this point, the Lady Tigers were starting to show their winning form. The score was tied at 6-all at one point. At the 10-12 mark with FEU leading, Coach Santa Maria decided to bring back the well rested Denise Tan. It was a see-saw battle from here on. Rachel Anne Daquis, Shaira Gonzales, and Macaila Irish May Morada provided most of the offense for FEU. UST on the other hand, relied on their veterans Mary Jean Balse and Venus Bernal to deliver. It seemed that Angeli Tabaquero was a bit off during this game.
At the 17-all mark, there was this controversial call made by the head referee in favor of UST. The slow-motion replay clearly showed that the ball got deflected off a UST blocker then went outside after (I think it was) Morada pounded the ball hard. The crowd got furious as expected. Secondary setter April Linor Jose of FEU came in to serve but made an error giving UST the set point advantage at 24-21. UST eventually won the third set, 25-21.

What a monumental upset!
Although I knew FEU was good, I didn’t think that UST could be beaten.
Oh well, this makes for good watching since there is now a triple tie for first place.
I bet coach August gave his UST team a tongue lashing for losing this one

the game between feu and ust was really great. kaya lang, mejo biased si mozzy sa mga comments niya. puro ust at si coach august na lang lagi ung sinasabi. halatang ust tigers si mozzy. n if feu was doing great, ust pa rin ang laging pinupuri. sana naman, maging fair ung mga commentators. nakakwala kasi ng ganang manood minsan. but it was all good. one of the best games ever

True, hj. But remember that FEU also has a lot of newbies. ‘Di ko napanood yung buong game, naabutan ko lang nung 4th set, 12-12 mark, tapos UST actually pulled away with a four point lead. Pagkabalik ko panalo na FEU. Well, this just makes things more interesting.
Good job, Adamson, for taking the no. 1 spot (because of a higher success rate). Good job then sa UE and UP for taking a set from Adamson and Ateneo! Hahaha.

to start things off, i applaud feu for winning yesterday’s game against ust…but i believe ust will stage a comeback and grab the championship trophy once again…feu may have the momentum right now but being the true champions that they are, the tigresses won’t allow this lapse to hinder them from grabbing the title which they ultimately deserve…even though they now have some adjustments to do with mance’s absence, the tigresses can still prove that they are the epitome of what champions are made of…not only do they have skills, they have the spirit and of course the looks…haha…no offense, feu’s daquis is the only good-looking girl in their team..ust has tabaquero, tan and torrijos…haha…that’s quite far-fetched from what i’m trying to point out…if i may say so, morada isn’t that good of a middle player…she won’t match up to what balse is made of since she lacks the height..but she does have skills and of course, the “EGO”…daquis still has a lot to do before she can surpass bernal’s level but she packs a lot of punch in her game, worthy of a chance for the national team first six i guess…gonzales is still inconsistent…and please, cafranca???…she doesn’t even make that big of a difference in the games…lol…the only player worthy of constant praise is semana who is really an all-around player…so much for that..let’s talk about my favorite team now…tabaquero’s game might have been off for a number of games but i know she’ll do way better on the next round..frankly, when she’s at her best, she is one solid outside hitter..bernal is simply the queen of outside hitters…definitely national team first six material..and balse is the best middle attacker today…you all can say what you want to say but i know UST will still go to the championship round and win back-to-back against adamson…i’m not trying to bash feu in any way, i’m just expressing my opinion…go USTE…peace…

Anthony, I thought i was the only one who noticed about WENDYANNE SEMANA. Your absolutely right about her versatility. No player, and i mean NO PLAYER comes close to her versatility. Double digits in points, digs, AND sets? Thats awesome. Its no wonder FEU won the beach volley tourney (her and shaira) Semana is an underrated superstar in the league.
The real factor of the game was FEU’s young libero Rose Ann Taganas. FEU’s floor defense had been a weakness the first few games but her performance was an absolute revalation. MJ Pepito-esque if i may say. If Patty Taganas’ cousin keeps it up, the lady tams are dangerous.
For UST.. it seemed that they just lacked their usual swagger coming into the game. When they were scoring points the “mojo” just wasnt there. Instead of the usual celebration of ‘yeah, we are owning this game!’ UST-style jubillation, they showed more of sighs of relieve with every point scored.
Maybe it was the presence of Ateneo hearthrob CHRIS TIU in the first two sets (both UST losses) that jolted the defending champs. Did he really have to sit in the front row? for ALL the players to notice???
Of course, they ARE the defending champs, and i expect them to bounce back with a vengence on whoever they play next. (speaking of which, wheres the schedule???)
On the subject of Tabaquero’s “slump” (for her standards anyway) it could be said that she’s a victim of her own success. She is definitely the most popular player in the game today and with that, shes under a microscope. teams are concentrating on her every move and opponents are becoming more successful at slowing down AGENT NUMBAH TWO. She needs to adjust and change her game a little to continue her success.
With apologies to the legions of tabaquero fans, she was read LIKE A BOOK by FEU. props to coach pamiliar for preparing his team well.
i’m sure the defending champs will bounce back, i wouldnt bet against them.

hi wewel, i think its feu or adamson will win…hehehe… sa tingin ko lang kasi these two teams improved alot, serafica is excellent in setting up and in “dunks” hehehe, as well as semana who is an all around player now, there is nothing this little girl cannot do inside the court. benting on the other hand is too strong in her hits, try to look closer on her everytime she hits a ball, mas malakas pa ata kesa kay balse at vernal…but of course this two girls are also good…pero i hope my two favorite team will go in the championship kasi in height and in built halos magkapareha lang itong dalawang ito… yun lang po…hehehe

wewel dont have any idea, am just relying on what is posted here, am sorry i cant help you on that, anyway just watch every game of this season, wednesdays and sundays, all of the teams now are very competitive and strong unlike last season, am actually enjoying much now watching every game, it doesnt matter on who is playing but off course like it very very very much if its feu or adamson…hehehe… am sad for ue because they are still winless upto this day, last year they were able to make it upto the final four….kawawa naman si alanguilan, shes also one of the good players in the season now… pero ok lang kasi bago din naman ang mga players nila, am also sad for la salle, pero they can still catch up, dati la salle fan ako kasi may carolino sisters, ala pa kasi si daquis sa feu nun, hehehe, and la salle was able to defeat ust in two staright win in season 68, baka ngayon feu o adamson na… am really hoping and pray for them to win…hehehe…atleast one of them…hehehe… aphinga muna ang uste,,, uste bigay niyo muna sa iba,,,hehehe…

to slytherinz: tan is not a bad setter and will never be a bad setter…she may have her off days but that’s only natural because she is a human being…semana may be better than her but i beg to disagree that jose is better than the highly-commented denise tan…that smurf in the form of jose has nothing to be proud of because tan is part of the national team and she isn’t…if semana and jose were that good, then they would’ve been chosen to be part of the national team…but i guess their capacity and of course their height are only up to par to the collegiate level..their abilities then are not worthy to be utilized in an international setting…maybe you should try reading articles who praise tan saying “when tan is at her best, she is THE BEST”…would those sport experts be lying when they uttered such statement?..please save me from the agony of hearing your bashing…

I think the absence of mance was a big factor sa pktalo ng ust. kung sinu sino kc pumasok sa game nila nung wla sya e. mejo nagkalat pa ung libero nila. ano ba ngyari kay mance nun?
Although strong offensive team ang feu, matatalo pa rin cla sa dmi ng mga errors nila.

i think the big factor that led to ust’s defeat wasn’t mance’s absence. i think mance is one of the worst in the line up. sorry! it was bernal’s off game during the 1st 3 sets. pinagpilitan kasi na maging middle spiker siya eh obvious naman that she wasn’t able to adjust. nung binalik sya sa pagiging wing spiker doon sila nakabawi though npot good enough cause their floor defense was really bad that day.
in volleyball, there are days talaga na wala ka mahugot mula sa players mo. at yun ang nangyari sa uste that day. sa lagay na yan wala ka pang mahugot sa kanila. pano na kaya when they are at their best?

to hj: bernal, balse, maizo, tabaquero, mabbayad, tan and balse (the libero) are all part of the national team…however maizo, mabbayad and balse are not in the UST line-up this season of the uaap…others include daquis, bautista, de leon and suarez..i forgot the name of the other members…and you are correct because bernal did have a hard time adjusting as a middle hitter..although it was her first position in the team before she was turned into an outside hitter, it has been almost 3 years since she played that position…and thank you for saying that tan is not a bad setter..i know she is not the best as of now but she has great skills and potential that’s why she was chosen to be part of the national team…

Tan is an excellent setter, no doubt about that. Pero since consecutive games na siyang off, bigyan niyo naman ng benefit of the doubt yung mga nagsspeculate sa kanya. Pero hanggang BOD lang kasi IMO Tan is still one of the better setters in the league.
Also, bakit to some UST fans, when their team loses it’s because they’re “off”, pero when the opposing team wins, it’s just “luck”? Wala na bang weight ang skill ng FEU? Just an honest observation.

to anthony: i suggest you double-check feu fans first before you go on judging UST fans…and so what if the players of UST are veterans?..being a veteran doesn’t mean that you’re old, it means you’re that great of a player who contributes much to the team’s success in the games…since ust has its veterans, it would imply that the team is a solid one…in addition, you can’t justify your comment “di sila fair kung mag isip” referring to ust fans because we all have our different opinions which each party should take into consideration…UST’s line-up during that particular match was not the strongest they could’ve put forth with the absence of mance as well as last season’s mabbayad and maizo..feu’s line-up was indeed as strong as it could get since their best players all played..given these two facts, it would appear that feu is still not a better team than ust because it took them 4 gruesome sets before defeating the tigresses…this would then suggest that even with the weaker line-up, ust is still a formidable force because they still gave feu a run for their money during that game..frankly speaking, UST is the better team compared to FEU simply by looking at the statistics here..UST overpowers FEU in almost every field…look into that…

to kristyll: mance was out of the UST line-up..with that, coach august decided to place bernal as a middle hitter and have cu be the open hitter…this change in the line-up didn’t work out for ust because bernal is not used to playing middle anymore…plus, cu was not that efficient as an open hitter because she couldn’t get as much kills as bernal could when playing in the said position..if coach august sticked with bernal in the open position and had benedicto to replace mance, i think UST would’ve had a better game because bernal could’ve scored more points…benedicto has the height to work with but she still lacks the game experience..anyways, past is past…true champions move on and think about what’s ahead..
to 2nd sight: the only time i accepted ust’s defeat was during the 1st game of the most recent v-league championship round..ust had chances but ssc did a better job in scoring points when it mattered most…you mentioned the games in #’s 1 & 2..ust did lost to feu yet they still showed everyone what true champions are made of…
through the wins and losses, ust will still reign #1..

Pero yes, lahat ng teams naman ay may off days. Regarding the V-League first game naman, i think Tabaquero was very good but Bernal and Balse weren’t their usual selves. In fact, SSC’s last point was a Latigay down-the-line hit, coming from a very bad set from Mondejar. The final score was 15-13!!! Kinaya na sana ng USTe yun, pero their defense was nonexistent.
Go na second round! I can’t stand the excitement! AT sana magkaroon ng all-star fantasy volleyball game!

The BEST pa rin ADAMSON coz they have the no. 1 setter and digger with SERAFICA and GATA. BENTING, LAGUILLES, GUSTILLO and SO will be leadingh the team in what they do besT, QUICK HITS!!! Sa blocking department lang lower ranked ang Adamson. Also ADAMSON is ranked the no. 1 setting team, no. 3 in one department and the rest they are at no. 2. Conclusion: They have the BEST SUCCESS RATE!!! That is why they are rated NUMBER 1!!!
Thus it would be Adamson against either ust o feu. Even LA SALLE will have the chance of beating at most the two said teams in the 2nd round…

to seriousobserver1: when it comes to attacks, ust is ranked 1st while adu is ranked 2nd..in the blocking department, ust is 2nd while adu is just 6th..in the service department, ust is 3rd while adu is 4th…in digging, ust is 5th while adu is 3rd…in setting, ust is 3rd while adu is 1st…and when it comes to receiving, ust is 1st while adu is 2nd…if you look closely into the statistics, adu only surpasses ust in the setting and digging department..hence, adu doesn’t have the best success rate…and ust is not “gasgas” as what you’re trying to imply..if they are, then adu should’ve beaten ust during their first encounter…sadly, the better team came out victorious..personally,adamson’s edge is their quickness, floor defense and setting ability…however, ust can counter that with their attacks, blocks, services and receives…at the end of the day, i still have confidence in ust…

volleyball is not about height alone and the tigresses don’t rely solely on their height so that they can win matches…they rely on their SKILLS and TEAMWORK in order to sweep their opponents off the court..
and we are not talking about the v-league here..we are talking about the UAAP…yes, UST did win back-to-back v-league titles with the help of roces but FEU had the equal opportunity to chose an import who will help them with their quest..yet it clearly appears that no matter what FEU does, it just can’t make it to the semi-finals of the v-league..i believe the facts i’ve presented grounded on statistics and performance convey which team is better…don’t be such a hypocrite because i know you know which team i’m talking about…with that, you know UST has the edge over FEU..and besides, FEU crumbled in the hands of UST during the UAAP finals last year WITHOUT the help of an import..take that…
