It’s going to be a bigger and better 2008 Philippine Blog Awards event. The blog awards is open to all Filipino bloggers. The aim is to recognize the local bloggers who use blogging as their medium to express themselves or the group they represent in their respective niches. But how does one define what a blog is? Wikipedia says:
A blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), audio (podcasting) are part of a wider network of social media. Micro-blogging is another type of blogging which consists of blogs with very short posts.
As of December 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 112 million blogs.
So a blog is a type of website that is more than just a personal online journal. I define blog as any site that is updated on a regular basis and which usually provides commentary as a means for interaction between the blogger/s and the readers. Why am I asking what a blog is? Because I’m already thinking about sites-slash-blogs I admire which I can nominate for the Best Sports Blog category for the 2008 Philippine Blog Awards. Here’s some of them:
- vleague.tk (http://vleague.tk/) - A volleyball website that is dedicated to the fans of the Shakey’s V-League created and maintained by Shelly, an avid supporter of the V-League. But vleague.tk is an actual forum (Proboards) that is community-based. So not sure yet if this site can be nominated.
- official Shakey-s V-League website (http://www.v-league.ph/) - This website (Joomla) provides almost real time info during the Shakey’s V-League tournament. The site allows you to post comments on most of its posts. It also showcases a forum. I will nominate this for the 2008 Blog Awards for sure, but it’s really up to the organizers and judges whether to qualify this or not.
- Bleacher’s Brew (http://bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/) - A personal blog (Blogger) created and maintained by photographer-slash-sports-writer Rick Olivares. His blog is an extension of his sports column in the Business Mirror magazine.
Do you guys know any other worthy sports blogs out there we can nominate? I will nominate all other sports-related blog out there that touches on the subject of volleyball!!! Here’s a list of last year’s blog awards nominees for the Best Sports category. As for Spikeithard.com, this blog is automatically DISQUALIFIED for the 2008 Philippine Blog Awards because we are part of the organizing committee. Our company, Sheero Media Solutions is one of the sponsors for the event. We also designed and developed the official Philippine Blog Awards website.
Please help spread the news (perhaps by posting about the blog awards on your blog or site). Might as well use the official blog awards banner graphic above if you are going to do so. The details on the venue, time and dates will be announced in the near future. Thanks.
