24th SEA Games Beach Volleyball: Heidi Illustre and Diane Pascua tandem lost to Indonesia

Was browsing through the TV channels last week (Friday) when I stumbled upon the 24th SEA Games being televised on NBN Channel 4. The 24th SEA Games was held at Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand (December 6-15, 2007). Team Philippines sent a total of 4 pairs for beach volleyball (for both Men’s and Women’s).

  • Men’s Beach Volleyball:
    Team PHI 1 - Tupaz / Verayo
    Team PHI 2 - Mowrey / Tuyay
  • Women’s Beach Volleyball:
    Team PHI 1 - Pascua / Illustre
    Team PHI 2 - Laborte / Carolino

I was able to watch beach volleyball action between Team PHI 1 (Heidi Illustre / Diane Pascua) versus Team INA 1 (Devota / Yokbeth) of Indonesia. The Fil-Am tandem of Illustre/Pascua were bronze medalists during the last 2005 SEA Games. It was already the start of the third and final set with each team winning one set a piece. Team Philippines took the first set at a commanding 11-21 score. But Team Indonesia caught up and won the second set at 23-21.

During the third set, it was a see-saw battle up until the 10-all mark. The taller Diane Pascua of Team Philippines provided most of the offense while Heidi Illustre was blocking most of the time. After spiking the ball hard against the blocker, Indonesia’s Yokbeth made another kill to bring her team to match point at 14-13. Team Philippines answered right back to tie the game.

The next two rallies became a heart-breaker for the Illustre/Pascua tandem. At the 14-all mark, Yokbeth was not able to receive the ball well but ended up converting this into a point by dinking the ball over. Team Indonesia was now at match point once again. Team Philippines went for the kill but their opponents were able to dig the ball. Realizing that the Filipina players were both at one side of the court, the Indonesians quickly brought the ball back over to the back line. Heidi Illustre and Diane Pascua tried to save the ball but was not able to get there on time. Team Indonesia won the third and final set at 16-14.

At this point of the tournament, Team Philippines have ended their bid for winning a gold medal for beach volleyball. None of the other Filipino beach volleyball pairs made it.

Philippines ranked 6th overall with a total of 41 gold, 91 silver, and 96 bronze for a total of 228 medals. Here’s the 24th SEA Games official game results:

Does anybody know why Philippines did not have any representation during the 2007 24th SEA Games for indoor volleyball?

They’re actually televising some games in the recent Women’s University Beach Volleyball tournament where a lot of the UAAP players participated.

The games are shown late at nights on channel 6, NBN, as part of the Elorde sports something or other.

I saw the game between ADMU-2 and ADMU-3. Patty Taganas and Limhengco were in ADMU-2 and they beat ADMU-3.

I must say that Patty Taganas looked good in a bikini.

I also saw Bello of ADMU, who is another cutey.

ako…alam ko! hindi daw kasi nag-poproduce ng gold medals ang pilipinas sa indoor volleyball! eh paanong hindi mag-poproduce ang philippines ng gold medals sa larangan ng volleyball, eh hindi naman sila pinopondohan ng maayos!? diba!? how can they produce gold medals if there are not enough funds to sponsor the players and the philippine volleyball team? (sa women’s ito ha! hindi sa men’s!)

the first reason is they dont have enough funds for our players..secondly, our players are busy with their studies obviously there still have uaap here to work on with..its hard nmn if they join the sea games and playing for the uaap at the same time db..think men..
