As always, I arrived late at The Arena. It was December 4, 2007 (Tuesday). Shakey’s V-League championship game between University of Santo Tomas and San Sebastian College. Best of three finals series.
- Game 1: The Lady Stags won in five thrilling sets.
- Game 2: UST answered right back, winning the second game by defeating the Lady Stags in 3 straight sets.
It’s now Game 3 - the championship game.
1st set: The Lady Stags starts strong
After being defeated by UST in 3 straight sets during game 2, the Lady Stags bounced back by taking the first set at 20-25. Most of the points were provided by Laurence Ann Latigay and guest player Jing Bualee. The San Sebastian team seemed to be determined to win the championship this time around.
2nd set: The jump serve that ended the set
It’s now the start of the second set. UST started strong leading by as much as 3 points at the 6-3 mark. It was Angeli Tabaquero and Venus Bernal who delivered for UST.
After a barrage of spectacular display of volleyball action by both teams, the Lady Tigers eventually gained momentum and took the lead at 13-11. Both teams simply never gave up and continued exchanging kills.
It was a see-saw battle towards the end of the second set. The score became 23-24 with UST leading at setpoint. San Sebastian was about to serve. Here’s the photo entitled “The jump serve that ended the second set” that would explain what happened next:
San Sebastian head coach Roger Gorayeb called in jump serve specialist China Repollo (#2) to replace Mirasol. Jump-serving under pressure, Repollo’s serve was way off the mark. It was outside. UST won the set at 25-23.
Repollo’s costly service error was a mistake any volleyball player could have made. She should be commended for having the guts to do what she was trained to do even under pressure. The Lady Stags did not let this error drag them down. Instead, they recomposed themselves and fought back on the next set.

i really enjoyed watching volleyball especially the UST TigresseS. Hi to all the players of ust especially to suzane roces hope to see you again in the next v-league season
am not aware kung meron na.. but why not publish a magazine exclusively for v-league… for interviews w/ the belles(coaches, fans also), side comments, photos (ofcorse) photo ops, etc… what do you think;)
