Ateneo wins over the Lady Falcons in 4 sets
November 30, 2007 (Friday). During the first game, Ateneo defeated Adamson to take on a 1-0 lead for the best of three series battle for Bronze: 14-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19. Best Scorers were the guest players for both squads. Neriza Bautista of Adamson with a total of 19 won points and Lithawat Kesinee of Ateneo with 26 points.
I wasn’t able to witness the first game that Ateneo won. By the time I got to The Arena, the San Sebastian vs. UST match was about to start and the 100Plus awarding was happening. Never had I seen The Arena fill up with so many Vleague fans. I’d say about 60% of the crowd were obviously UST fans since you can see them holding their elongated hotdog-like yellow balloons. The rest were the “Go Baste!!!” crowd. It was an intense match. It was so noisy and fun at the same time watching the Shakey’s V-League Finals.
How to make the crowd furious: Make controversial calls
The fourth set proved to be the pivotal set. San Sebastian was leading 2 sets to 1 against UST. It was the most dramatic set as well. Head referee Mr. Efren Gaa (He’s the one standing on the platform beside the net) made 2 controversial calls that made coach Roger Gorayeb and the San Sebastian fans so furious Mr. Gaa peed in his pants (just kidding). For the first controversial call, the head referee accused a Lady Stag of committing a back line violation when it was actually their setter Ancheta who jumped and tossed the ball legally. Was he freaking blind!!!? This happened in front of me. Just a few minutes later, Mr. Gaa made another controversial call, this time, accusing San Sebastian of a holding (or lifting) violation. Both controversial calls were in favor of UST. At this point of the match, the entire “Go Baste!!” crowd was boo-ing whoever was serving from the UST team. Eventually, the Tigers survived the fourth set winning by two points: 23-35. You can’t help but wonder should the right calls were made by the officials, the Lady Stags should have ended the match in this set. There were actually a few more minor controversial calls made by the game officials towards the end.
I wasn’t able to stay and finish the 5th set. The intensity of the match was too much for me I was worried I might get a heart-attack should I have stayed longer. Well, actually my camera’s battery went dead so that’s why I decided to go home. I’m sure the fifth and final set was a thriller.
San Sebastian defeated UST in 5 sets: 25-16, 25-19, 17-25, 23-25, 15-13. It really should have ended in the fourth set. But the defending champs never gave up and apparently lady luck was on their side. In the end, it was the Lady Stags who took game 1. Best Scorers were Laurence Ann Latigay of San Sebastian with a total of 28 won points (Bualee had 23 points) and Venus Bernal of UST with 17 points.

syet.. nde ko alam kung kanino ako kakampi.. i really want UST to win. they have been my team since the league started.. plus i am a grad of UST rin. pero fan na rin ako ng ssc team since last conference.. especially the power hitters latigay and bualee.. gusto ko sana makita ang ssc na manalo.. ang hirap naman neto..

if there were controversial calls on the 4th set that favored UST, binawi naman yun ng referee. the referee made calls in favor of ssc din na errors daw ng UST, like the lifting violation of maizo or was it denise tan. the only difference is mas ma-react ung ssc than ust.
damn that refs!

UST and SSC both deserve the win…parehas magaling at palaban mga players..mahirap na maging one sided kasi sa sobrang husay ng bawat players on both teams in the end hindi mo na iintindihin yung results yung mismong game nalang na nakakaenjoy!
[Reply]

every game naman may mga maling call ang kahit sinong referee.. it’s just that this is the FINALS, so everybody is uber-reacting. Let’s just enjoy the game, kahit naman may mga controversial calls, both teams still deserve to win!

UST will definitely win the finals. Why do i say that? SSC-R needed five sets to pose a victory over UST. Except for the first set, it was a really tight game. But UST literally annihalated SSC-R, winning in THREE sets. It is good to note that in those three sets it wasn’t even close. SSC-R had only a total of 46 pts. That’s just sad. But not taking anything away from SSC-R, Mary Jane Pepito is one of the more prettier faces. UST only has Tan (who pales beside Pepito).

i really want UST to win.,first & foremost kc,cla lang ang team na walang “import”…they deserve to win becoz they are magaling period..proud pinoy kc ako kaya GO UST!!!pls extend my regards to tabaquero & bernal…

Actually Penpen, UST has a guest player too. She is Suzanne Roces, formerly of UE. Hindi nga lang siya from abroad.
Anyway, I saw the replay of Game 1 and it was a very nice, very tight game.
I agree that either team could have won and both teams did deserve to win as both played hard and both never gave up. It was probably one of the best games of the year.
I also enjoyed seeing Joanna Marie Torrijos finally start again for UST. She is probably the most lady-like of the team. Specially when she serves, she has this form of cocking her hips and gracefully arching her back to hit the ball. I actually think that given a choice, I would rather go out with Joanna than Denise (in my dreams!). Hehehe….
Denise Patricia Tan was thankfully good and Maria Angeli Tabaquero was phenomenal, as usual. Angeli is probably the most complete player in the UST team. She spikes great, she sets great, she digs really great, she receives great. No wonder she is the fan favourite.
On the other side, I really, really enjoyed watching Mary Jane Pepito. She is a super cutey who plays excellently all the time. She probably looks a lot cuter in person and wearing her uniform. Geez, those kolehiyala uniforms are real killers. I wonder if she has a boyfriend already?
Laurence Ann Latigay and Rysabelle Devanadera were also quite good. Very focused and sharp.
I’ll have to agree though, that knowing the result of Game 2, where UST just demolished SSC-R, I would have to say that UST seems poised to take back-to-back V-League crowns.
Still, it’s not over until it’s over. And hope spring eternal.
Go SSC-R Lady Stags! Hi to my crushie, Mary Jane Pepito.

Hi Paul, I would submit Maria Angeli Tabaquero and Joanna Marie Torrijos as other cuties in the UST squad.
I think sa unang tingin, angat na angat talaga ang beauty ni Denise sa UST. But looking further, you can see that both Angeli and Joanna are also cute.
In fact, Angeli has a face that looks prettier and prettier the more you look at her. She just sorts of blooms and grows on you. Plus her smile is quite angelic.
What can you say about hottie Denise Patricia Tan though? Her appeal is very strong. How can anyone root against her?
For SSC-R, I like Rysabelle Devanadera and Laurence Ann Latigay. Specially when Sasa looks so calm and cool on the court. Nothing seems to faze her, even after a fastastic spike or a great dig, she looks the same calm and cool player. And LuAnn just looks so focused all the time.
But of course, my fave player is super cutey Mary Jane Pepito. I have this HUGE crush on her. Makes me wish I was young again and a student in SSC-R.

Kumusta na kaya si Charo =)
I think it’s great that this league allows import, kasi, you see the level of their skills… Anyway, just a thought.
[Reply]
It’s a level playing field with all teams allowed a single guest player
It is up to the team which guest player they choose, be it a Filipina or non-Filipina
So, as long as the playing field is fair, it makes for a good tournament
[Reply]
ok lang magkroon ng import as long as naglalaro ng maayos

parang ang bitter nung sumulat hahaha
or talagang ayaw lang nung writes sa UST? hehehe
My two cents: subjective yung “controversial calls” especially coming from a person that is not standing in the referee’s podium (or whatever you call the thing where the first referee stands). He could’ve seen something that the others failed to see. Basic thing is to accept the call and get the next point. I think SSC proved that they wont let some “controversial calls” take the game away from them.

Hahaha!
You have a good point Rodvill.
However, I will have to respectfully disagree with your overall assessment.
I think that it is good that we get foreign nationals to play in our leagues. That way, we can actually improve our game.
For example, the national team players in UST can now confidently say that they can handle Thai players. They’ve now been able to handle both Bualee and Kesinee. Hindi na kakaiba sa kanila ang power ng Thai players.
Also, the teams which these players go to also have their own overall skills increased. Just because of the knowledge transfer and the skill trasnfer going on while you practice with these players. So I suspect that both ADMU and SSC-R will be stronger when then go back to compete in the UAAP and NCAA, respectively.
Finally, these foreign guest players only play in the Shakey’s V-League. The local leagues like the UAAP, NCAA and WNCAA still prohibit non-Filipinos playing.
So there are still a lot of venues where local talent can blossom.
The Shakey’s V-League is a great change of pace tournament where we can actually see at most one guest player per team.
As for scouting, aren’t we able to actually scout both Bualee and Kesinee microscopically well?
Hehehe…..

i have watched v-league on serveral occations on both live at the Arena and delayed telecast on tv and i found the skills, aggressiveness and audacity of these young athletes really inspiring… the government should provide funds for the training for these young and promising athletes come international competition, hindi lang tayo pang boxing, bowling o billards… malayo din mararating natin sa volleyball.. keep it up, congrats on both Team USTe and Team Baste for not just winning or losing the game but winning the hearts of your beloved Alma Matter… MABUHAY!!!
