La Salle overpowers Ateneo in 3 sets

1st Game: FEU loses to San Sebastian in 4 sets

It was another exciting day at the Shakey’s V-League last November 5 (Monday). During the first game of the day, San Sebastian College defeated FEU in 4 sets: 17-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-9. After Rachelle Anne Daquis got injured during the second set, it was an easy sweep for the Lady Stags. Daquis sprained her left ankle when she accidentally stepped on a teammate. FEU dropped to a 2-3 record while Bualee and the Lady Stags won all their games so far to put up a 5-0 record. Best Scorer for the Lady Tamarraws was Wendy Anne Semana with 8 won points. Best Scorer for San Sebastian was no other than their guest player Jaroensri Bualee with a total of 26 won points.

2nd Game: A classic Ateneo versus La Salle volleyball match

The P50 I paid for the ringside ticket was well worth it as I got to witness another classic battle between rival schools De La Salle and Ateneo de Manila. La Salle overpowered the Lady Eagles in 3 straight sets: 25-23, 25-19, 25-20. Best Scorers were Lithawat Kesinee of Ateneo with 14 won points and Jacqueline Alarca of La Salle with 15 won points. The loss puts Ateneo at third place with a 4-2 record while La Salle has 2-3.

De La Salle team captain Reiea Saet

During the first set, it was neck-to-neck volleyball action as both squads played with tenacity against each other. At the 3 all mark, Charo Soriano dives for the ball to save it. Ateneo wins that rally as Stephanie Mercado of La Salle commits an attack error. Both teams continue to outclass one another. 11 all. 15 all. 17 all. Then at the 18 all mark, open spiker Charo Soriano makes a powerful down the line (zone 1) spike that delighted the V-League fans. At 23-22, the referees make a controversial call when a net violation was called against Ateneo. Coach Ronald Dulay stands up and protests but there was nothing he could do. La Salle now has setpoint advantage. Lady Eagle Lithawat Kesinee answers back with a kill to make it 24-23. But she then gives away the set by committing a service error that sailed long. The Archers take the first set, 25-23.

I’m stuck in between. Haha. It’s my two favorite teams battling out each other.

I feel that Ateneo had an off-day this day while La Salle on the other hand, had lady luck on their side.

Most of La Salle’s attempts got in while Ateneo, who is famous for digging hard spikes especially from hard hitters like Bernal, Balse and Tabaquero of UST, Carrillo of Lyceum, Bualee of San Sebastian, etc. had very poor reception. Most of La Salle’s spikes were not that hard and blockable but went in because of the Ateneo team can’t quite find their rhythm.

La Salle had a field day of blocking. You could see that Charo Soriano got demoralized in 2nd and 3rd set that’s why her spikes are not that powerful as compared in her energy in the 1st set. Plus, another thing is the setter, Limgenco can’t quite blend well with Kesinee, Acevedo and Soriano, hence, they had a hard time attacking even easy balls.

La Salle was very determined and hungry coming into this game. I admire them of taking advantage of Ateneo having an off-day. They knew it that’s why they were never threatened and celebrated each point they got. I hope this would boost the morale of the Lady Archers and could make them win their next games so that the win against Ateneo would not be put into waste.

Of course, I’m a Lasallian but I admit it, if La Salle makes it in the Semi-Finals, and they face Ateneo, Ateneo would most likely be angry and avenge their upsetting defeat from the eliminations. Might be another three-set match but a lopsided one. Hehe.

ANIMO ATENEO! ANIMO LA SALLE!

there were controversies behind ateneo losing to dlsu in 3 straight sets. but all strong teams will always have their “off game”. wherein panget na yung laro, may halo pang malas and this is what happened to ateneo.
