4th Set: Ateneo answers back again and regains momentum
It’s now or never for the Blue squad. Ateneo leads at 5-3 but UST showing their winning form take back the lead at the 6-8 mark. At this point, the fans get to witness another long and exciting rally which UST wins through a strong spike by Mary Jean Balse. Ateneo’s libero Stephanie Gabriel dives for the ball but does not get there in time. Roces spikes it outside to tie the score at 12-all.
Lithawat Kesinee steps up as she produces point after point - making it all look so easy. Ateneo takes the lead, 15-12. Soriano gets blocked but her teammates recover the ball, tosses it back to her, then Charo Soriano finally wins the rally by dropping the ball. Ateneo keeps on playing superbly and eventually reaches the 20-point mark with UST at 16.
Another long and electrifying rally takes place. Kesinee gets solidly blocked by Balse but Lady Eagle Patty Taganas somehow found a way to save the ball to bring it over back to the opponent’s side. UST sets up Bernal but she gets blocked this time. The crowd becomes wild.
At the 22-17 mark, UST commits two consecutive reception errors. At this point, you can no longer see Angeli Tabaquero smiling and the same goes for the rest of the team. It’s 24-17. The set eventually ends up with UST making a service error. Ateneo has fought back and wins the fourth set at 25-19.
5th Set: The pathetic Ateneans win
Play maker Karla Bello of Ateneo draws first blood after dinking the ball over. At the 2-all mark, Ateneo begins to pull away. Stunned and upset, UST gets buried away as Kesinee keeps on piling points for Ateneo both offensively and defense-wise. At one point, Balse once again solidly blocks Kesinee but the Thai import answers back quickly by blocking Bernal twice. It’s 8-3 and everything seems to be going Ateneo’s way. UST Coach is already up on his feet as he watches his Tigers struggle.
The UST Spikers keep on fighting. They win another long rally via a kill by Tabaquero. Lady Eagle Taganas responds making it 11-5. It is apparent that UST has been demoralized at this point and because of this, they keep on committing unforced errors at crucial times. Reception errors made by UST has allowed Ateneo to take advantage and dictate the flow of the game. 12-5. Mary Jean Balse loses her offensive power at the net as she spikes it long. 13-5. Lady Eagle Carmina Denise Acevedo provides the last few points for Ateneo. At the last rally of the match, Suzanne Roces gets blocked. Ateneo wins their first game in the Shakey’s V-League Second Conference upsetting the UST Growling Tigers in 5 sets.
UST’s Best Scorer was no other than Venus Bernal with a total of 25 won points out of 100 attempts. Best Scorer for Ateneo was guest player Lithawat Kesinee with 32 won points out of 108 attempts.
As for the second game of the day, the FEU Tamarraws won in 5 sets against Lyceum: 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12. FEU’s Best Scorer was Rachel Anne Daquis with a total of 23 won points out of 88 attempts. Lyceum’s Best Scorer was Beverly Boto with 19 won points out of 77 attempts.

I think this is a game where Ateneo outplayed or played better against UST. Ateneo had the better defense in this game. Props to UST but ever since the 1st conference, floor defense is their problem.

napanood ko ang delayed telecast ng NBN. was excited as ever with usual expectation from UST’s side but i was also expecting for a stronger and better admu knowing that they’ve undergone weeks of training in thailand. [ilang weeks lang yon pero obvious ang improvement. attributed ba sa galing ng pinoy? fast learners (most)?]
i’m frustrated a bit. i expected for more and longer rallies. pero halos patay agad ang bola. konti lang ang matatagal na rallies. parang nasira ang composure ng UST. was it pressure? excitement? nakalog ba sila sa idea na nag-train ang nakalaban nila? whatever.
i am really looking forward to ADMU-SSC battle. yeah right… question about “who’s the better import, Bualee or Kesinee?”
sa tingin ko, mas versatile si bualee when it comes to attacks. halos alam lahat ng klase ng atake. running, quick, open, middle, back… kahit saan mo bigyan, pumapalo si bualee. at malakas. nagkaka-fatigue nga lang kasi siya talaga ang gumagawa para sa san sebastian. in fairness to her teammates na binibigyan din naman ng pagkakataon like devanadera, latigay and pulido at ok naman performance nila, at magagaling din naman sila. pero mas malaki ang part ni bualee sa SSC, sa v-league.
kesinee… mas magaling sa blocking and reception compared to bualee. also more strategic, i mean ok timing niya sa mga off-speed hits and drop balls[is this the right term?]..
pareho silang malakas. mas matangkad ba si kesinee? that’s her advantage.
it will really be an exciting match to watch: ADMU vs SSC-R.
ngayon pa lang, masasabi ko that top three contenders are ADMU, SSC and UST in alphabetical order para fair and safe.
have no favorite team, just favorite players. hindi ko rin naman sineseryoso competition ng mga universities na yan. i’m not enrolled in any of those institutions. kahit pa dun ako nag-aaral, i wouldn’t mind. i just love the sports. for sports’ sake.

why complain about the thai imports? alright, magagaling talaga and team ng UST. siyempre, national players mga yon. pero, against isang thai import pa nga lang plus locals with thai training talo na, pano na lang kung whole team of thai national players na ang babanggain nila? dapat ba silang mahiya o ma-challenge?
