I wanted to watch the De La Salle vs Lyceum match but the game slots were swapped I supposed. When I arrived at The Arena, San Juan, it was already the start of the 1st set between Adamson and Letran. I got to witness another impressive performance by Lady Falcon star Suzanne Roces. I can’t help but notice how good-looking she really is. (If ever she develops long hair, then that’s the only time I’ll use strikingly beautiful to describe her).
The 1st set leveled at 15-15 at one point. Towards the end, Letran committed errors. The set ended with Adamson winning it 25-20. As usual, the last point belonged to Roces with a down the line open spike.
To start off the 2nd set, Roces drew first blood as her not too powerful but swift and accurate spike smashed 2 Letran blockers. Letran’s main offense came from the tandem of open spiker #9 Michelle Carolino and utility #4 Marietta Carolino. (Not sure if they’re related to one another). #4 was obviously the crowd favorite since she was the prettiest from Letran. Letran won this time, 21-25.
At this point, more and more people are starting to enter The Arena. There was a mandatory 3-minute timeout at the end of the set. The Shakey’s music jingle kept on looping at the background (luring people to eat at Shakey’s after watching V-League). 6 men did synchronized mopping in the court. I moved to another seat to avoid the crowd.
In volleyball, when you’re tied with the opposing team at 1 set a piece, it’s crucial to win the 3rd set to gain momentum. As expected Roces was the go-to-girl (or guy) for Adamson as she killed the ball from almost everywhere. The veteran Michelle Carolino of Letran on the other hand, piled up points for her team as she made successful attacks from the open spot. She’s also one of the few players in V-League who specializes in hitting from beyond the attack line when she’s a backliner. Towards the end, Roces proved to be human after all as Letran was starting to effectively block her attacks. But Adamson survived and won the 3rd set, 25-20.
Letran displayed good defense during the 4th set thanks to their tallest middle blocker #1 Dianne Diaz. She defended the net well from attacks coming from Roces and Adamson’s #4 Rissa Jane Laguilles who stepped up her game. At the 13-14 mark, Roces made an in-your-face running spike that thrilled the crowd. Letran won the set, 18-25.
It was the 5th set. A Letran fan kept on shouting something that annoyed the crowd whenever Adamson was serving. Adamson took the lead at the 12-6 mark. The short and agile Letran #12 Bangladesh Pantaleon (not sure if she’s one of the imports but her name sounds like it) provided crucial points for her team. Another running spike from Roces made the score 14-8. Veteran Carolino scored from an open spike. Then as expected, Adamson’s Roces ended the match with another running attack which got deflected outside by the Letran blockers. Adamson won, 15-10.
It was another exciting match which Adamson won against Letran: 25-20; 21-25; 25-20; 18-25; 15-10.
